I Am Number Four Blu-ray Review

Another movie for the teenage love scene! This flick is filled with nothing but pretty and beautiful people. So if you like staring at only hott people in uber fake situations then you have got the right movie! I Am Number Four is based upon the hit selling book to which Dreamworks owned the rights to. Michael Bay is even attached to this film, but you won’t notice it until perhaps the 2nd hour of the movie. I Am Number Four follows our hero John Smith (Alex Pettyfer) as he lands on Earth and tries to go under the radar of being detected because in reality he has super powers.

In fact as the movie opens up its after he has been on Earth and is partying with friends at a beach when a blinding light comes out from his scar which signals that Number 3 has died. (Guess who’s next?) In a mad dash John and his protector leave the town and go off to find a new life in Paradise, Ohio. Though contradicting enough he has no probleming confiding in people in this new town about his powers and background of being a Lorien. The movie almost reeks of Smallville, but hey who am I to bash this when I haven’t read the book!

John seems to fall for Sarah who is this blonde cliche of a chick that dates the high school quarterback etc. However she leaves him and when John comes around it seems as if the two start to hit it off. Key note, Loriens are supposed to only fall in love once and bond forever. Yet …

Insert Michael Bay. So with the appearance of Number 6 (Teresa Palmer) came the insertion of BAY as the fight scenes took over. This chick had like every power imaginable and was kicking some major evil magadorian ass! She can shoot plasma blasts and turn invisible amongst other things. While the movie built so much on the romance it seems that now Number 4 and Number 6 might be able to hook up in a future movie. I guess there goes that bonding once thing. The movie kind of saved itself when the fighting took over (at least from a guy’s perspective) and the many saracastic comments dished out by Number 6 helped the cheesiness that the film was building up for me.

I am Number Four comes your way with a beautiful 1080p transfer that definitely does the job! The blacks are black and the colors are vibrant when need be. Michael Bay’s effects prove to be gold once again on blu-ray. This isn’t an old film, and thus isn’t a whole lot of staying true to form. It’s a fiction film, and when there is any bit of money behind a fiction film they tend to always look great on blu-ray. I Am Number Four is no different. Explosions look incredible.

The audio track comes you in a nice DTS HD Master 5.1 track for those capable of decoding HD audio. The dialogue is clear and front heavy on your set up, but it’s the closing of the movie that is pretty spectacular with all the special effects due to Michael Bay. The sub will go into overload and handle all the plasma blasts nicely. There’s definitely a pretty enngulfing experience going on during those scenes. Overall, the audio was more than compensating for this film.

Thankfully, there are supplements on this edition. Lately we’ve had a slew of titles come in with little to no suppplements. However, don’t get too excited as even tho there are some extras they are pretty slim pickings at best. The deleted scenes are about all there is unless you count the DVD and digital copy in the 3 disc edition.

6 Deleted Scenes with introductions by Director D.J. Caruso
– Extended Strangers in Paradise
– Sam’s Mom
– Worth Mentioning
– Power Prank
– Trying to Connect
– Extended Warsaw Basement

Overall if you are a fan of “I Am Number Four” then I presume you’ll be buying this regardless. However, for those on the fence about this blu-ray release in regards to video and audio quality then fear not as they are done very nicely. Unless you are an extrememly anal stickler then you won’t find much wrong in those departments. The 3 disc edition includes a nice amount of supplements as well as a digital copy which help provide extra value to this disc release. As for those thinking of picking this up as a blind buy, you might want to do some more research as to what this film is about. It may or may not be your cup of tea. For the most part ; Dreamworks, Caruso and Michael Bay did a great job and the film ended much better than it started in my book, and I anticipate a sequel.
