Haha. My collecting has slowed right down..Each to their own, but really not sure how I feel about people who feel the need to get each and every release out there just for the sake of it.
Personally, it‘s only certain lines, and ‘special’ films that I collect - multiple releases of the same films, lacklustre designs, mismatching sets (Star Wars being a main offender) et al have all turned me off from the urge to have to spend good money on the same old tripe.

Don’t see why I should spend my hard earned cash when the designers out there don’t take the care on what should be premium products ..
Yeah
Never understood the "need" to buy turds just "to keep a collection going"

Ultimately that sort of "collecting" becomes financially unsustainable and ends being sold

I just don’t get it. It blows my mind. The amount of praise ToC get on their twitter with these designs is disgusting. Honestly they will never learn or change or improve because they only need to look there for their creepy bum liking feedback. With a few idiots even wanting the ToC treatment on every bond and/or every Craig Bond movie. Seriously this company will never change. They are blindsided by twitter and most likely insta. It’s a joke

I think they're considered 'premium' by those who don't know or own any releases from Czech Republic's FilmArena, British EverythingBlu, Italian CineMuseum, Korea's NovaMedia, Hong Kong's MantaLab, China's HDZeta and BluFans, etc.
All they add to the steelbook is a tiny metal pin, which is housed in a thick clear plastic overlay, making the package twice as thick, to portray its 'premiumness', if that's a word. Oh, and a folded six ways poster, which noone will ever hang or look at more than once (always say that paper and ink could have better been used to make 4-6 photocards).
If the steelbook itself is nice, then it can be a worthy purchase. Especially a few earlier releases, which had those mini steelbooks for the pins, I really loved those, imagining movies on MiniDisc being issued in such packaging in an alternative universe.
So V for Vendetta and, especially, Fury Road, are really good as steels.

Bit like the Germans with matte steels..... swear they love them as a Collective. @TheCollector86 @hatredhorror @jonnybobbytimmy ?
I prefer matte steels as well, but my father was polish-german, so I guess that 'fits'. :spoil:

That's hoarding, 'just to have'.
Not going to theaters past 10 years, and downloading almost everything, before buying, I tend to leave everything I've watched on an HDD and didn't absolutely hate, 'just to have it'. I now got over 40 external drives...
Others do that with discs, although my collection has filled two rooms and spread into the corridors, I consider myself buying only strictly according to my [bad] tastes, genres and categories.
There's a guy on YouTube, and I don't like to badmouth a fellow collector, who is buying everything from thrift stores, at $1 to $5 max. I consider his accumulation as hoarding trash. Has a whole basement of that crap, doesn't even wipe them down. Gets things on account whether he has it yet, or not. And with all that his worldview is, of course, very limited, very 'american'. Coming across titles like Koyaanisqatsi, or films with famous French actresses, he doesn't know what they are, so leaves those. It's disturbingly appalling.

Oh, absolutely.

End of the day, people are absolutely free to spend their money how they want and I’d personally rather spend my money on something tangible like a steelbook over having a night out on the town nowadays, but I’ve never understood those people out there who have to have multiple versions of the same movie, which they then leave sealed, all because of slightly different slips.

To me, it’s insane and tantamount to obsessive hoarding, but each to their own!

I hoard, to a degree, on certain things.
I think my biggest ‘wtf?’ question with certain steelbook collectors are those who:

1) buy multiple versions of the same movie, just ‘because’ - I’ve seen collectors with over 8 different copies of (the same) certain Marvel films for example.

2) spend good money on premium goods, and then leave them sealed. I’ll never for the life of me get those who buy certain films only to leave them in their wrappers. Not only are you not able to watch the film, but you’re missing out on the inside artwork, and often the steelbook art in general if it’s a sealed full slip.

3) complain about certain steelbooks as being extremely poor in terms of design, yet still spend their hard earned cash to buy it anyway, either through fear of missing out or because they have to have everything released.

Not to talk bad of those who do any of the above, but almost feels to the point certain individuals do it for bragging rights over and above any other reason.

I fully agree with the buying and leaving it shrink wrapped part. part of the joy of owning steelbooks and collectors sets is actually looking at them and the extras they come with. Otherwise why even bother. And I agree for the most part with buying multiples of the same movie. Like I do have some duplicates but most of mine have been an upgrade path, normal blu ray - steelbook - 4k. And in most instances I will then get rid of the normal blu ray. I don't get rid of steelbooks though cos why would you? But like when there are 10 different versions of a steelbook and people get them all that baffles me. I saw recently people showing off the black widow 4k steelbook, the normal 4k release and the normal blu ray and I'm like why? Especially in that situation why not just get the steel.

But the thing that absolutely gets on my tits are people buying 2 of the same thing, one to open and one to keep sealed.

Agreed, on all of the above! Like you, I only buy second versions of the same film to upgrade.

I know collectors come in all varieties on here, and those who obsessively collect aren’t hurting anyone, but I find it fairly worrying when people buy so many copies of the same version of a film, all because they have to have all the editions available.

Personally see it as a colossal waste of money that doesn’t achieve anything, but hey - who am I to judge.

Eww, Marvel. But I also have multiple versions of movies, and I think most here do. It's because over the years many favorites have gotten different editions, with new extras, or new transfers, or just cool new packaging. Something like Evil Dead, The Fifth Element, Blade Runner - you just can't have only one edition! I probably have 10 of each by now.

2) spend good money on premium goods, and then leave them sealed. I’ll never for the life of me get those who buy certain films only to leave them in their wrappers. I don't do that, but those that do surely have another edition that's open, that they can watch (remember, multiple copies owned ;) Oh, and that's why there were so called quarter slips in one-clicks, so such people could also see at least the front of a steel, and still keep it sealed.
I just don’t open everything right away, and might not get around to watching it for years, so it stays sealed. Often another edition comes out by then, so if a previous is no longer needed, it could be sold sealed. I didn't actually try to sell anything for the past 20 years, would rather give them away as prizes on my forum (TotalDVD.ru), but I think the time is coming - entirely too many versions.
Although, again, if I really like the movie, I'll keep all the editions bought over the years, even just for a cover, or a DVD menu, something...

3) complain about certain steelbooks as being extremely poor in terms of design, yet still spend their hard earned cash to buy it anyway, either through fear of missing out or because they have to have everything released.

First of all, you can't be sure they're "hard earned", or that it's cash at all. ;)
Secondly, they might have seen some real life photos or videos, and changed their mind. Or, yeah, just gotta get every version of that film.
I'm glad I'm not that 'sick', but close regarding some titles. It's just my bad taste covers quite a lot, and TV series and anime are expensive as is, and take up a lot of space already (or used to when 1 season was in 7-12 amaray cases, often housed in TWO hard boxes). Maybe some have larger houses or apartments, more money, or just a tighter concentration. If I had not 4-5 thousand titles, but, say, 100, I could buy every edition of each from every country in the world. So, whatever...:wacky:

Thanks for taking my points in a well mannered way - even if I don’t ‘get’ some of the collector habits here, I didn’t mean to disrespect anyone so cheers for taking it all in good spirit!

One thing that I will say is this - this is one of the nicest communities I’ve had the pleasure of being a part of; even if I dip in and out of the forums, it’s always a pleasure to see (mostly) good natured comments - makes a nice change from the toxicity of a lot of places online and it’s to the credit of most the members here that its remained that way over the years.

This title was obviously chosen to help bring light to the new Bond movie. Anywhere that bond can be getting recognition is what they want leading up to a big movie. From talks I already know studios will do titles in steelbook because of the promotional aspect behind it. Its good marketing for them as the SteelBooks will get talked about and shared etc and bring up an IP or franchise etc. in the conscious of consumers. Cue space jam.

ToC started out as a great name, design, and line. Scanavo obviously took elements from Mondo-esque success and made their own line.

Where things are lacking, is a better understanding of the collector base. It doesn't take a visionary to realize opportunities such as this one will come up, and if trying to keep to your name as ToC you will diminish the brand you have spent time and money building. You need ANOTHER LINE. One that can handle all titles that are not CULT.

2 lines, problem solved.

I personally see it the other way, in that it’s a quick cash grab by ToC trying to capitalise on the upcoming release of No Time To Die by releasing Craigs first venture - I don’t really see it as promotion for the upcoming film; if you’re a movie fan and/or a Bond film, this release isn’t going to serve much in the form of promo.

…in my opinion, of course.

You’re welcome to feel that, and it works both ways. Trailers on tv, big theatrical marketing budget can also help feed the hype machine which might merit a purchase of these types of releases. However I’m just telling you what I have heard first hand from studio folks and scanavo that SteelBooks serve as great marketing for them so there can be utility behind it besides the end result of us just getting a disc in a case.

As a full package it's definitely more tempting, but I was done the second they increased the price to £35. £30 was pushing it already for what they offer.
