I know right gritty scenes with music over the top dose not work
maybe one song ok but I think there was maybe 5 or more songs hahaha

I hated the part where they make you think he got bummed in the shower by the guards
Both Gaga and Phoenix are brilliant. Strong performance by both. The issue is the story... Or lack of it. Nothing happens for 2 hours. I was in a packed auditorium on Friday night at least 10 people walked out after around 90 mins. Heard a person say behind megritty "oh god they're signing again" haha.

People should just save their money. This film is critically panned with a very low score on Rotten Tomatoes. YouTubers are also giving this film very bad reviews.

My local cinema has gone all in on this movie and is showing it 25 times a day for the next week
Suck to be them then but to be fair, if you had to pick a film in the current slate to bet on you'd have thought Joker 2 would be the winner.

I do hear that the substance is very good but if not for film nerds I'd have never even been aware of it, did it have negative marketing budget or something?

Compared to Joker it probably did. I saw several trailers played during other showings though.
Mubi have plastered The Substance all over social media for months now, it's just too complex and audacious for mainstream audiences maybe, that's the way I see it based on reviews I've read.
It played for two weeks and two showings a day at my local Odeon. Totally ignored. I didn't even get to see it.
Gutted.

I don't know why all this discussion is not in the movie's thread, or why most are surprised this turned out bad - I called it back in April.
I do need to see it still, maybe I'll love it...

I think the whole point of these movies are to show the downfall of Arthur fleck and not the Joker.

Arthur is just the light that sparks the match for the crazy that causes the joker to come about.

Major spoiler here:
At the end when Arthur is killed and the Psycho starts carving his face, It is a dead give away or nod to Heath Ledgers joker and showing that anyone can be the joker

I think it will be a movie that is looked at years from now in a different light.

The Joker is bigger than anyone person.

I didn't love it and i didn't hate it, But it has given me a-lot to think about in regards to it.

Time for some levity. We had Bob Hope, Jonny Cash, and Steve Jobs. Now we have no Hope, no Cash, and no Jobs. I really hope we don't lose Kevin Bacon this year

Off to see The Substance in just over an hour, maybe I'll see this next week.

Saw it last night. Definitely a case of people just riding the hate train for the sake of it. Whilst I will say it’s not the greatest movie ever made, it was better than I thought it was going to be.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Joker: Folie à Deux is the first Hollywood comic book movie to earn a D CinemaScore from opening day audiences, spelling doom for its box office future. By comparison, Joker earned a favourable B+ CinemaScore.

CinemaScore measures a film’s appeal by polling early reactions to major releases.

The sequel’s D-rating puts it on par with Russell Crowe’s terribly rated horror film The Exorcism, which is the only other film in the post-pandemic era to score as poor as D, according to Collider.

Even Francis Ford Coppola’s incredibly divisive Megalopolis managed to score higher with a D+.

With a D CinemaScore, Joker 2 is the most poorly reviewed studio comic book film of all time, falling behind even the much maligned Batman & Robin, Morbius, and Madame Web, all of which earned a C+.

Wow. Those are some savage stats. Tbh though, I don't really class Joker (or in extention, this sequel) as a "comic book movie". I know it takes the characters names, setting etc... from the comic books, but that's about it really.

The actual origin and story are original as far as I'm aware. It's also very "real" and grounded (the original, anyway), which is also probably why it was so popular (again, just the original).

If I listened to everything “YouTubers” said I’d be a completely insufferable c*nt, not just a mildly insufferable one. Everyone should form their own opinions.
I don't disagree with the idea of everyone forming their own opinions, but my comment was meant for those who buy steelbooks before even seeing the movie since that seems to be common for many collectors for some reason.
