Does any one actually watch any extras or listen to commentary tracks i have a small collection of discs compared to some but have never watched any extra
When it comes to extras there are some releases that have fantastic documentaries or features about a film included
When it's a film based on real events you often get fantastic documentary that is about the real events not the film itself.

Some releases the extras can be better than the film itself

If you never watched extras you likely will have missed some brilliant documentaries and making off featurettes that have been included on some DVD/Blu-ray releases
Some extras can be minor but some are a must viewing especially if you into the film iteslf or the content it's based on

The reason why a lot of people purchase dvd or bluray or UHD etc etc re-releases is when new extras are included.
This is often why re-releases sell even if a customer has a previous release and why often you see previous releases listed on ebay for sale is the re-release with new extras is better than previous release due to new extras provided.

This New Middle Earth release though provides less content than the previous Blu-ray middle earth edition that was released in 2016

This new release of middle earth has none of the previous extras so will not be enough for those who own previous release to purchase and lot won't sell their previous release as they need that for the previous extras.

It only has 2 new extras on a Blu-ray disc and none of the previous extras

A new release should include all previous extras from a label previous release as well as any new extras unless a disc with extras was exclusive to that previous release
Customers who not purchased a release before get to watch previous extras and new extras without having to purchase a previous release
Back cataloge films get sales from all ages a lot would not even been born or earning a wage when previous editions was released
A baby grows up to become teenager and then later an adult from this you get new customers every year and this why back cataloge films keep getting re-releases
And those who own previous release can sell or giveaway that release and not be missing any discs extras as the new edition would include them

I only watched the LOTR extras once, but I watched all of it (and they may actually have been longer than the EE movies) and I frequently watch the extras. OTOH, I rarely listen to commentaries and I’m not sure that I listened to these. I did listen to Roger Ebert’s track on Dark City. I may have listened to his Citizen Kane commentary too.

I've never watched any of the extra's on any of the physical media I've ever owned. I have found myself watching most of the behind the scenes documentary's that Disney have put out on D+ for their shows though (The Mandalorian, WandaVision etc etc). I think it's just more accessible to watch that kind of thing when you're sat scrolling looking for things to watch vs having to go put in a disc

Not gonna lie, it's very rare that I do. However, with films I absolutely love and feel I can't get enough of, then I like to watch everything! That said, I've still never actually listened to the commentary for LOTR :bag:

Your "scrolling" comment made me realise I mostly tend to watch behind-the-scenes stuff whilst I'm working... so basically just have it on in the background.

You are missing out on brilliant extras on some DVD and Blu-ray releases that have fantastic documentary's and making off featurettes
Some are about the film or about real live events a film is based on

I have some DVD and Blu-ray releases the extras documentary's are better than the film itself and that includes films that would be highly rated

Some releases I purchase just because it includes new extras even if I have a previous release it will depend on what the new extras are

What is important though is a new release include previous extras as well as any new extras especially for those who not puchased an existing release (The exception would be disc extras content that was exclusive to a release)

One of the main advantages of DVD and Blu-ray beside picture or sound quality is the ability to include extras on discs compared to the days of VHS or even majority of streaming services that provide HD or 4K only having the film

Some iTunes releases also include extras with iTunes Extras but not every film so a DVD or Blu-ray needs to be purchased for extras on a lot of releases

It's also why Blu-ray is often included with a UHD release as the extras are most times on the Blu-ray disc bar a few exceptions where a UHD also has the extras

If you own any of the films on Blu-ray list give the extras a viewing

Releases that have excellent extras
Alien Blu-ray Anthology/Blade Runner (4K Special Edition (4 Discs) - or 30th Anniversary Blu-ray Collector Editions (3 Discs) includes all versions of the films and extensive extras)/Fight Club/Harry Potter/Lord of The Rings Trilogy (The previous Blu-ray Extended releases or the Blu-ray Middle Middle Earth Collection but not this new Middle Earth 4K UHD Collection as it does not include any of the previous extras)/Apocalypse Now/ An American Werewolf in London (Arrow Video)/The Thing (Scream Factory/Arrow Video/Turbine releases)/Avatar/Back to the Future/Black Hawk Down 4K (3 Discs) /Braveheart/Casino Royale Collector's Edition/Close Encounters of the Third Kind/Jaws/The Godfather/Taxi Driver/Zodiac/Lawrence of Arabia Blu-ray 50th Anniversary (Collector's Edition (4 Discs)/Ben Hur (3 Discs release) and many more films the list is huge amount that have excellect extras

There is lot's of DVD and Blu-ray releases that have fantastic disc extras
There is even some DVD releases from a few years ago that has brilliant extras that was not included on a Blu-ray
Some blu-ray discs carry over only a selection of extras that was on a DVD release or be missing lot of content or have no extras at all

Labels like Arrow VIdeo/Criterion/Scream Factory/Second Sight , I could list a lot more the reason why they sell well is because of the disc extras included

Collectors will buy this at least those ones wanting to have complete collection. Other than that set is complete BS.
I'm waiting for WEA OC. EZ win! :cigar::woot::Snap:

I too remember reading about it somewhere, but seriously, that would be approx. 9 discs per film. Splitting one film on two discs, that would still be approx. seven extra discs for each title. Simpy impossible.
Each film on UHD and BD theatrical plus extended: that's already 6 discs per LOTR and 4 per Hobbit, as those EEs weren't split - which is what we have in this box set, and that's all we have... plus 1 measly disc of extras.
If it were to be truly "Ultimate", there would also be:
Three bonus Blu-rays for EACH Hobbit film - theatrical version bonus BD and two 'Appendices' bonus BDs each = 9 discs.
For LOTR the extra discs were all DVDs, so I don't know how many they'd fit on one BD, probably all 4, surely on UHD, but there were 4 for each film, 2 Appendices, 1 theatrical bonus DVD, and 1 Costa Botes docs, so as is, if they wouldn't make new master discs, it's 12 more. I guess that's how someone came with 51, it's the 30 BD/UHD discs we have here, plus 21 of the ones I mentioned.

Which country has 51 discs?

Nobody. Just people pissing and moaning non stop about how this collection doesn't have every single extra ever released on previous editions...that they all already own...but want them again in this collection but with new 4K discs and they want the most epic art they have ever seen on this which apparently it doesn't have.

Because you know, nobody is ever happy.

There is now new separate Blu-ray ray releases of Lord of the Rings Trilogy Extended and Theatrical editions with the remastered transfer

The new Blu-ray extended trilogy edition includes the previous extras it's a 15 disc release has all the extras from previous extended edition.

USA releases already available to pre order

You do understand don't you that there is always new customers every day/week/month/year who don't have any of the previous physical home media releases

You also have those that have previous releases who want the new transfers but don't want 4K UHD or don't want to spend £200 or more

This is why you get new releases and re-releases on home media of back catalogue films
Baby grows up to be a teenager then an Adult who has money to spend from this you get new customers every day who don't have previous releases on Blu-ray
A lot of the new customers was not even born or was earning a wage when previous home media editions was released

Have you ever purchased a film on Blu-ray as in not had it in your collection before as when the previous release came out you was just a kid or not working yet you would be considered a new customer when you purchased that re-release of a back catalouge film

These new customers and those that have an older release get the new transfers and previous extras without having to purchase an older release or more expensive edition

The new Blu-ray trilogy extended edition will sell more anyway than the 4K UHD editions (As UHD still only has a tiny market share)
Most people that still like physical media purchase DVD or Blu-ray and that shows with the market share of purchases done
DVD still outsells Blu-ray and Blu-ray outsells UHD Discs

Those that no longer purchase physical media do digital purchases instead or stream from likes of Netflix etc
Most 4K viewing is done on 4K TV's using streaming with apps built into those Tv's or streaming devices connected to a 4K tv this why UHD disc sales still has tiny market share
Example Apple TV 4K box you get access to iTunes extras on lot of releases and watch the films in 4K if a 4K version of film been released and even previous HD purchases you get free upgrade to 4K if a 4K release available
Also some iTunes releases often include extras you don't get on physical media releases

Middle Earth Collection Extended is available on iTunes includes the previous extras from both Lord of the Rings and Hobbit and cost lot less than having to purchase the UK 4K UHD Disc Ultimate Collection
iTunes price is £44.99/€49.99 and those who have Apple TV 4K box can watch in 4K and those who don't have Apple TV 4K Box can watch in HD on PC or Apple iPhone/Ipad etc
iTunes extras can also be watched on a PC using iTunes app or on iPhone/iPad using Apple TV app
TV's that have apple TV app you don't get access to itunes extras but you do if you using Apple TV Box device connected to your TV or you can just connect your PC to your TV to watch the iTunes extras on a big screen

At the moment iTunes release It's only missing the 2 extras that are on the new bonus blu-ray disc that is in the ultimate box set but could easily later be added to iTunes as that often happens you see new extras added at a later date and without having to pay anything extra

Price of Lord Of the Rings Blu-ray Trilogy Extended Edition is $69.99 and possibly less with some retailers closer to release date or after

UK Blu-ray releases of the Lord of the Rings Trilogy remaster editions will be announced soon

But all that pissing and moaning...so unnecessary.
Lot of people won't have previous release so that is why they would expect a remastered edition to include the previous extras

The Blu-ray Trilogy Extended Edition solves that problem and will sell better anyway than the UHD edition and is lot cheaper option

And those that don't want physical media can purchase iTunes editions of the extended and also get the extras and at a lot cheaper price and includes films in both HD and 4K
If you have Apple TV 4K Box you can watch in 4K UHD if you don't have Apple TV Box you watch in HD
iTunes you can purchase either Middle Earth Extended Collection or Lord of the Rings Extended both will include the extras

12 seconds in my brain couldn't even compute how the box collapsed like that :rofl:
Must say I do actually really like that "feature" and hope more use it going forward... I often struggle to store the wide sets (or vice versa in some cases), so having the option to fold it into a box is great!

Only a major studio could make a video, where you can't see whether the individual cases are digipacks, or what...

P.S. PaulBoland, you know you wrote basically the same thing three times just on this page. I guess you assume noone reads the whole thread, but still, so much effort...
Also, I hope you're not advocating for streaming. That is not owning, and that is not 4k quality.

No extra content from previous releases? This must be a joke. It's 2021 and I will have to buy the old extended DVD boxes for a film of this magnitude. Nothing ultimate about this one. I am just gonna buy the 4k steelbooks instead.

Film releases are not just Physical Media
You include Digital Purchases

Most public now use streaming and do digital purchases in regards to Films and Music as to if you like that or not it still counts

There is more 4K content available with streaming platforms than you have available on UHD discs
You better get used to this as that is how lot of people now watch films and listen to music
This why you see Netflix/Amazon/Apple TV/HBO and other streaming platforms now fund and produce a lot of Films and TV content and you will see lot more happen some will be big budget releases
More revenue is now got from digital purchases and streaming subscriptions than physical media releases does that's been happening a few years now

I still purchase physical media as you very well know but a lot of the public now use streaming instead and that will increase

Video quality in regards to streaming is lot different compared to years ago as lot more homes now have gigabit broadband
The difference in video quality the average public would not notice the difference which is why a lot have switched from physical media to streaming past few years
In some cases you get better picture quality as some content is available to stream in HD or 4K and but physical media release is only on DVD or not available on Physical media anymore or was VHS previously and never even got a DVD or Blu-ray release

iTunes including extras on some releases means you get same extras as the discs and in some releases even more extras than you get on discs
