The extreme. The odd. The transgressive. “Cult film” has a loose definition – any grouping that can include THE TOXIC AVENGER, Tommy Wiseau’s THE ROOM, and a $100 million adaptation of CATS sure has to be – but the energy and passions of the (usually) outsider artists making these films has influenced the past century of cinema. The love of cult cinema lies at the heart of Mondo – hell, we share our very name with a subgenre. Our company grew up within Alamo Drafthouse’s film-loving culture, and has been shaped by our friends and collaborators at genre-focused film festival Fantastic Fest, the nonprofit American Genre Film Archive, and Austin video rental shops Vulcan Video (R.I.P.) and I Luv Video. That’s why we’re psyched this week to offer three new books that cult devotees like us will devour – two from author Mike McPadden, Heavy Metal Movies and Teen Movie Hell, and one from writer Fred Van Lente and editor Nate Cosby called The Art of Troma.
