The next leapfrog in technology?

Sony has given a lot to talk about after its CES 2023 keynote, not only for the presentation of Project Leonardo, its new PS5 controller for players with disabilities, the Gran Turismo movie teaser or because Gran Turismo 7 will implement support for PlayStation VR2, but also in its smaller presentations in its booth where we could see part of its conceptual prototypes that solve many problems in terms of capture and digitization for the metaverse, as well as a new proposal for 3D.

Spatial Reality Display

We can assure this technology generates the "wow effect" that we have not seen for years in an event like CES. This prototype shown on a 27-inch screen features eye-tracking technology to be able to adapt the 3D depending on the angle at which the user sees it.
This demo of 3D space images allows showing real size objects, something that could be translated into all kinds of needs, either for doctors to review three-dimensional scans or for designers to take their creativity to the limit. However, when asked the demonstrator if this technology could be taken to video games, he answered "we are already working on it" and only a few seconds had to pass before I could see images worked with a graphics engine, emulating a 3D troll.

As if you could touch it

The feeling generated by this technology is such that we felt like touching it, in fact, we tried to bring our hand closer without touching the screen and we managed to blend our fingers with the 3D object just like in a science fiction movie. The most amazing thing about this patent is that you can move from all angles and you will not have any distortion of what you are seeing.

During this demo, we saw other applications such as a sort of soccer match replay simulator with virtual reality and mixed reality technology developed with their other patent Hawk-Eye. On the other hand, we also had demos of architecture and computer-aided design.

Now we're talking 3D, the 3D we have now is sad joke. I actually threw away a working 3D TV and all three liquid crystal 3D glasses because it just sucked. Can't wait for this to hit the mainstream and come down in price, I'll be one of the ones standing in line to buy one. :thanks:

If you had the right tv- 3D is great. If you have the wrong tv - it's not so great.
the idea of oled tvs and 3D was terrible. Oled can barely muster enough luminance to show HDR. (Average luninace for oled being around 700 nits).
If you had an LED with 1800 nits of luminance- then you have the proper illumination for 3D.
The Sony Z9D (which is the one I have) is the perfect 3D tv. It's a 4K 3D tv with 1800 nits. So not only do you have proper luminance- But you now have 1080p in each eye with the 4K upscale.
It's one of those cases where the gear you are using is a determining factor. (And lord knows there were many bad 3D tvs made).

I'm wholeheartedly going to have to disagree with you on that. I've seen it on a Z9D at my friends house, even at the theater it's just terrible terrible terrible. 3D right now sux, why do you think you can't buy anymore 3D TVs, because the technology SUX plain and simple. Can you watch 3D TV without wearing glasses, no, so it SUX! It's just a downright terrible experience for me, also the theaters need to just drop 3D period and give more auditorium room for normal 2D. GAWD I can't stand 3D!!!

I hate to tell you - but its kinda where everything is going. People are loving VR - which is incredibly immersive 3D....and The theaters need to be able to give people something that can't get at home, like 3D and Imax.
And this Sony device is probably the first step to glasses-free 3D films.
(i'm sure James Cameron has been working on similar tech).

Yes when it turns to a glasses-free 3D experience, then I'll be interested and VR is different in the sense that there are no other distractions and your fixed on one focal point.

3D in Imax is great, 3d in other theaters where it was reald or whatever sucks. too dark.

If your in a bad theater, run poorly- even 2d will suck.
They have to know what they're doing.
But, you are right that in the past many theaters had bad 3D showings. But with today's tech and added luminance levels- this should never be an issue.
