What's the best IKEA bookshelf for steelbooks and amaray ?

Hey,

I'm looking for the best IKEA bookshelf for steelbooks and blu-ray/4K UHD standard editions (amaray).

I've heard Billy is good, is there another one you recommend ?

Thanks !

Billys are what I currently use, and if you're just storing steelbooks/amarays and other similar size editions, then you can add a further 2 shelves (sold separately) to each bookcase giving you a total of 8 shelves. I've always been happy with those, so never really bothered to look for anything else tbh, and I see many other collectors using them also.

Thank you guys ! If I add these 2 shelves, is the size perfect ? I mean, there won't be a huge gap above steelbooks or amarays right ?

There will be gaps of varying sizes unfortunately... the fixed middle shelf (which acts as a support) means you can't quite spread the removable shelves out equally.

Here's an old video of my setup from years back which will hopefully give you an idea of the gaps sizes etc...

Billys are perfectly fine, but what I don't like about them is their depth. I would rather have a shelf with 20 cm depth (Billys are 28 cm).
Depth works perfect for me as I'm limited to space in my room so can double stack steels or use the extra space to display figures etc on the few billys I do have.

Another vote for Billy's and extra shelf. I'm rapidly running out of space so I need to rethink the Dalek placement and start using some of the space on top :shipped:

I use the Billys - they were the best made readily available/ priced case I could find in the UK. The benefits were the ability to get additional shelves and width/ heights/ colour that wasnt on offer anywhere else at the time. If you go for the taller option there is an add on you can get that extends the case to ceiling height. I converted a wall floor to ceiling Billys. The shelves arent always conveniently spaced to maximise media storage to I drilled in some extra holes bought additional shelves and maxed out every inch. Only nuisance was the central fixed shelf but I arranged my media around that. I should say I store steelbooks, vinyl and CD's in mine so the variation in size allows me to max it out. Only problem I hav now is finding another wall as I maxed the wall out a while back so I've random bookcases popping up everywhere. Oh yeah, if you have any old VHS tapes lying around, I found them a good size for holding the steelbooks forward so they arent sat too deep in the case, but thats a matter of how you want things to look. Cheers

Thanks a lot for all your answers. Indeed, there's still a gap above steelbooks. Is there a way to minimize it ?
It doesn't look clean at all to have to put amaray horizontally above those that are vertical...

May I suggest the Prepac Triple Width Barrister Tower, it's made for Blu-rays and every shelf can hold a standing blu-ray or Amaray case. This pic is my second one and I haven't filled it yet, as you can see on the left side there are Blu-rays standing on each level. Excuse the dirtiness, I need to dust and clean up a little when I have time.

This shows mine after I reduced the gaps. Basically added extra shelves and added a couple of holes myself

It looks very nice but I live in Europe, so we don't have it in stock here

Depends what you want to store.. if its just bluray you'll need to measure to check the number of shelves for the job but all dimensions are on the Web page .. my set up in the pic is entirely Billy. I did the basic build then bought extra shelves as I went along. Good luck
