Miramax and Hulu June 1 said they have signed a multiyear agreement that opens the acclaimed independent studio’s catalog to the online content aggregator co-owned by The Walt Disney Co., News Corp., and Comcast.
As part of the deal, Hulu Plus subscribers will be able to watch hundreds of Miramax titles on multiple platforms, including the TV, tablets, computers and mobile phones. Additionally, Hulu will soon rotate a selection of about 15 Miramax films each month for free on Hulu.com for non-Plus members, with periodic ad breaks – the first time Miramax titles have become available through an ad-supported streaming service.
Miramax, which was founded and later sold by Bob and Harvey Weinstein, boasts of catalog of more than 700 movies, including Good Will Hunting, The Piano, My Left Foot, Chasing Amy, Clerks, Swingers, Sling Blade, From Dusk Till Dawn, The Crying Game, Strictly Ballroom, Muriel's Wedding and Reservoir Dogs. Foreign films include Amelie, Life is Beautiful and Cinema Paradiso. Other franchises include "Spy Kids," "Halloween," "Scary Movie," "Scream" and "Hellraiser" titles.
“Making our films available via premium digital distribution channels is extremely important to Miramax,” said Miramax CEO Mike Lang, in a statement. “Hulu has established its presence in the market as a leader in innovation and in delivering value for consumers and content owners.”
Since its acquisition last year by an investor group from Disney, Miramax has aggressively inked North American and European distribution deals for its catalog, including most recently Netflix.
Last month Lionsgate took retail control (including transactional VOD and electronic sellthrough) of about 550 titles beginning in March with The Switch and Scream, Scream 2 and Scream 3 — the latter three coincided with the Scream 4 theatrical release in April by The Weinstein Co.
Separately, Miramax signed retail deals with a Canadian distributor and Echo Bridge Entertainment — the latter including about 250 lesser known catalog titles.
Miramax also has a distribution deal with Bob and Harvey Weinstein that includes home entertainment distribution of planned sequels of Clerks, From Dusk Till Dawn, Bridget Jones’s Diary, Copland, Shall We Dance, Swingers and The Amityville Horror, among others, by The Weinstein Co.
“Our goal at Miramax is to work with the right partners to fully maximize every asset in our extraordinary film catalog across all platforms,” Lang said at the time.
