The film Lion by Garth Davis already sets a mark on this year's top films of 2017. Stars include Dev Patel (Slumdog Millionaire), Nicole Kidman, Rooney Mara and is based on a true story.
The film is about five year old Saroo, who gets lost on a train which takes him thousands of miles across India, away from home and family. Saroo must learn to survive alone in Kolkata, before ultimately being adopted by an Australian couple. Twenty five years later, armed with only a handful of memories, his unwavering determination, and a revolutionary technology known as Google Earth, he sets out to find his lost family and finally return to his first home.
Lion is praised for it's beautiful soundtrack and composition by Dustin O'Halloran (Transparent) and Hauschka. Overall the score music in this film is both stirring and evocative of all the wellspring of emotions that the film taps into.
For the non-score part of the movie Sia wrote the song "Never Give Up" which is an anthemic, Bollywood-inspired track produced by Greg Kurstin and easily reflects on what the story teaches us in life; never give up. The song's theme of persistence seems to mesh nicely with the rest of the film's music.
Lion received six Oscar nominations at the 89th Academy Awards, including Best Original Score, Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor (Patel), Best Supporting Actress (Kidman) and Best Adapted Screenplay.
