Summit Home Entertainment May 31 said it would release sci-fi thriller Source Code into the retail channel July 8 for electronic sellthrough and video-on-demand — 19 days ahead of its packaged media release July 26.
The movie, starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Michelle Monaghan and Vera Farmiga, has generated $111 million in global box office since its April 1 theatrical release.
Summit, in a statement, said the early release is a test that involves traditional video-on-demand and electronic sellthrough. It does not include premium VOD, the controversial retail window DirecTV is currently offering select releases from Warner Home Video, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment and Universal Studios Home Entertainment for $29.99 eight weeks after their theatrical launch.
The studio will bow the DVD at $26.99 and Blu-ray at $30.49. Summit said traditional VOD and electronic sellthrough would also be available on the movie’s street date.
“As the way a consumer’s consumption of feature films evolves, we are always looking for new ways that meet these demands,” said Steve Nickerson, president, Summit Home Entertainment, in a statement. “While we are optimistic about the consumer appetite for this type of home entertainment release pattern, we are only conducting a test in this case and not making an overall policy shift at this time. Once the results are in we will analyze the data and see what the consumer has to say.”
