It’s official! After months of speculation, THE X-FILES will return to FOX in the form of a six-episode event series. Thirteen years after the original series wrapped (plus two films released theatrically), THE X-FILES creator/executive producer Chris Carter will helm the new series alongside returning stars, David Duchovny (Fox Mulder) and Gillian Anderson (Dana Scully).

Fox Television Group Chairmen and CEOs Dana Walden and Gary Newman as well as Carter made the announcement earlier today, stating that the new series will begin production this summer. No further details were discussed, but with the production start-date so close, expect additional news to come to light rather soon.

Said Newman and Walden of returning to the world of Mulder and Scully:

We had the privilege of working with Chris on all nine seasons of THE X-FILES — one of the most rewarding creative experiences of our careers — and we couldn’t be more excited to explore that incredible world with him again. THE X-FILES was not only a seminal show for both the studio and the network, it was a worldwide phenomenon that shaped pop culture – yet remained a true gem for the legions of fans who embraced it from the beginning. Few shows on television have drawn such dedicated fans as THE X-FILES and we’re ecstatic to give them the next thrilling chapter of Mulder and Scully they’ve been waiting for.

THE X-FILES originally aired in September 1993 and continued on for nine years, winning numerous awards including Emmys, Golden Globes and a Peabody. A certified sci-fi phenomenon, the show followed the unexplained cases of FBI Agents Mulder and Scully as they solved mysteries and crimes related to the paranormal and unknown.

Loved the tribute to Kim Manners in episode 3. Very well done.

I'm really enjoying this series so far. I'd forgotten how much I'd loved the X-Files. Those stand alone 'creature' episodes are definitely the most fun (as Scully pointed out!)

Here in Ireland we get to see it 2 days after the U.S. which is awesome :)

Only just saw first episode on channel 5 and it was amazing!!!

I was almost emotional been a huge xfiles fan from the beginning and it's awesome it's back and in my opinion just continued brilliantly :)

WTF was with that last episode?

What a way to leave something, especially if the makers aren't sure if they'll be making any more.

The way they left it, surely they'll have to finish the story??

Disappointing abrupt end to an otherwise enjoyable event series......

Yeah, i wasn't too thrilled with how the last episode felt super rushed. Seem like that one episode should have been 2-3 to space it out better. Overall, i loved the new season, but it felt like Carter wanted to do too much with it for the 6 episodes. And I don't mind the cliffhanger to end a series, if that's the case. It reminds me of how the first movie ended. But there is no much left to answer, that it does feel "irresponsible" of the writers to do this when they aren't sure if they are doing anymore. Seems sloppy.

The X-Files returns! Fox orders 10-episode event series

Fox has ordered a second installment of The X-Files event series, the network announced Thursday.

The new 10-episode installment will feature David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson reprising their roles as FBI Agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, respectively, while creator Chris Carter will be back as an executive producer.

“Iconic characters, rich storytelling, bold creators – these are the hallmarks of great TV shows,” said David Madden, president of Fox. “And they are some of the reasons why The X-Files has had such a profound impact on millions of fans worldwide. Chris’ creativity, along with the brilliant work of David and Gillian, continue to propel this pop culture phenomenon, and we can’t wait to see what fresh mysteries Mulder and Scully uncover in this next chapter of The X-Files.

The series, which originally debuted in September 1993 for a nine-season run, returned in 2016 for a six-episode revival that drew an average multi-platform audience of nearly 16 million viewers, becoming last season’s No. 2 broadcast drama.

The news of another installment comes as no real surprise. At the Television Critics Association’s winter press tour, Madden told reporters that while the deal-making is “complex” on the show due to the schedules of Duchovny and Anderson, the network expected “to have an announcement shortly.” Madden also noted there would likely be more episodes — true to his word, there will be 10 hours, versus the first installment’s six.

Production on The X-Files is set to begin in summer, with the event series airing sometime during the 2017-2018 season.

I'm in for this, I thought the event series was average but it did have its decent moments. Hopefully this is a step up.

Still enjoying the show, can't wait for it to start up again, in my opinion, any X-files is better than none at all.....every time I hear that original opening it brings me right back....
