I believe at the time of the US Sony Steelbook in 2024 it was said that the films complicated production and amount of particular effects work, probably digital and analogue combined that it was suggested at least by the decision that it would either be to complex to recreate it at a higher resolution or to expensive. I also think there was something said about the heavy grading it had in post production being another complicating factor. Might be wrong about this though.

I have the Kimchidvd Fullslip steelbook with a lenti insert edition, so I guess I got a better one.

I didn't buy the US 2024 release, so will get this nice Boxset for the printed materials, and if it turns out to be a better Sony transfer, then that'll be a bonus.

Having a bigger color gamut is a GOOD thing. All the DPs I know LOVE the wider gamut.
Deakins also hates Lens anomolies and anamorphic 2.35 widescreen. So he's an odd duck anyway.

That's really nice, and a big relief on the price. I wonder if a steelbook would fit in the box, if the poster and some other stuff are removed. Love the Polaroids, but it's a missed opportunity to not also have the filmstrips from the photo booth.

I'm all for 10 bit color, I just hate the automatic brightness hike of a screen during HDR video, and unnecessarily lowered blacks just so that you could have brighter whites. I don't need to be blinded, all my screens are at less than 20% peak brightness (unless outside during a bright day), and I don't understand this TV nits 'race', when we watch movies in a light controlled environment (mostly).

Switch modes. You should have a few different ones- One should say "cinema" or "film". It will be more balanced.
Actually most people live with opposite problem- for years OLED panels could not get past 800 nits
The early discs were mastered at 4000 nits, and more recently they got dialed back to 1000 nit range. But the mastering still varies. (BLADE RUNNER 2049 was mastered at 10,000 nits!).
But since TVs vary in luminance and tone-mapping, you will see people complaining about HDR being too bright and also people complaining that it's not bright enough!

Nah, that's the worst pre-set mode ever, on any telly, makes everything looks dim, dull, and ugly, like at an old cinema where the projector bulb is dying but no one would change it. :shipped:
I calibrate each TV with a THX disc.

Right, I miss the days when you set everything up once in a decade, bought a disc, popped it in, and everyone saw pretty much the same picture.
Now it seems you have to adjust nearly everything for each. There are recommendations coming from every side – for that movie you need to turn that up, on that player you better switch this mode to that, and that to this. Jeez.

Actually its even worse when they are making mistakes on the encodes.
They doubled up the chroma on DEAD AGAIN by accident- and now you need to turn on LIVE COLOR setting to make it look correct.
I had to redo the audio and re-encode a new disc for ROCKY II because they screwed up the pitch of the audio.
Had to remux and author a new disc for the 4K of Master & Commander because they left out the DTS audio that was a reference staple. (Same with DANTE'S PEAK)
I've had to fix the gamma on a number of titles in DaVinci Resolve. Etc.
Some discs get replacement programs- but a lot of these mistakes never get fixed.:meh:

This is a fantastic film. I have the KimchiDVD Green Steelbook which is one my favourite steelbook designs. I've ordered this as well now. For this price, it's a steal, given how much extras you're getting in the packaging. Love french cinema.

I really like the look of this set. Gorgeous packaging, but the movie is one that I struggle with on repeat viewing: hard to recapture the magic if the first time.

Don't watch it for a decade and you'll be fine.
To be fair, there aren't very many films that retain that initial magic for me. In over 45 years watching movies, Id probably estimate about less than ten that would still floor me every time.
