I think if you really want emotional impact in this movie (and no doubt there will be) then it will be just one or two main characters who deliver the 'final blow' to save the day for the rest.
Like many others here the obvious choices will be Cap and Stark, either individually or together, but then the movie is 'the Avengers' so perhaps they will all come together as one to deliver
the final blow and one or two may be sacrificed because of it? I'm guessing it will involve some sort of 'energy' so something combined? It's VERY difficult to say.
I think Captain Marvel will appear like she will do it but will be thwarted somehow.

Gut feeling and answer: Iron Man

Reason: He was 'the guy' who started it all with movie #1. He's also one of the older characters, hence his longevity in the MCU. What more can he do except cameos? Plus we all know he isn't part of Spidey 2 and instead Happy Hogan.
I think he will bow out under these circumstances. I also thought about the trailer and how he thinks back through the years of what he;s been up against to get to where he's at. Cap being the same.

Part of me wants to say Cap and Stark combined but I'll say that one saves the other lol. So many possibilities.

Hopefully people who have stated 'X OR X' won't count as opposed to 'X AND X' and won't sneakily edit the post later on lol

I think it'll only come down to the OG characters, not any new ones. A fitting end would be Cap and Iron Man together saving the day, probably sacrificing themselves in the process
