Maybe a 'best gig ever' thread would be a good idea.
Saw some decent bands in the 80's/90's/early 2000's before becoming disillusioned and started focusing more on movies. Smaller, more intimate venues definitely top my list of the best ever for me personally with a couple of standouts.

absolutely. it always comes back to the writing - do i care about / what happens to these characters?

although the outlays are much more significant and the returns aren't anywhere as high as the horror films, here's some sci-fi examples that show a good script and engaged actors can make all the box office difference against a low budget:
