I'll be honest, I have no idea what this is. When I saw it during PS Showcase I thought it was an online game.
I actually still much prefer the deluxe edition one so that makes things easier. Given the CE was easy to order I ordered that in case I end up wanting it but I doubt I will.Always a shame when two editions come with different steelbooks
The more expensive one should include them both
Anyone playing this? I'm on the fence about picking it up... reviews are very mixed
Did you find the first 6-8 hours as much of a slog as reviews make it out to be?View attachment 613215
I've played about 5-6 hours since the weekend. They've patched a lot of the UI and some of the control issues have been resolved. Storage has been resolved, HDR and VRR have been resolved now. The Devs are listening and patching all the time. Character does move exactly like Rockstar game characters where they focus on fluid animation and it can feel slightly sluggish just like Red Dead 2 or GTA 5. You get used to it and it's totally fine.
The button mapping is a jumble and can take a while to get the finger muscle memory down. I'm used to it after a couple of hours.
Honestly. The story is the weakest part. That's not going to improve, other than that, if you're on a base console (PS5 or XSX) and not the Pro or high end PC, you will have to skip around the graphics options until you find your liking.
I'm on base PS5 and use an LG OLED that can handle 120hz at 4k and has VRR. That's not to say the game is 120fps, just that the TV can handle the raw data which the game is delivered in before the resolution and FPS get down sampled.
So. I use Balanced Mode with V Sync off and 120hz left switched on and it's hitting 40+ FPS and above. The frame pacing is solid and with a VRR TV the 40 FPS balanced mode with 120hz looks super smooth.
If you don't have VRR capability or a 120hz TV screen. I'd recommend using the Quality mode and turning off 120hz and turning on V Sync.
VRR is doing a lot of heavy lifting in the Balanced mode and without it the frame pacing is wobbly.
Do not play Performance mode on base console, it's wicked blurry.
Quality mode is also absolutely perfect. It's 30fps but is locked and looks beautiful.
I'd switch between those two modes to see which you like.
Also, turn down particle effects, motion blur switch off and up the control camera speed and acceleration. All helps.
For what it's worth. I LOVE this game. It's so good. Giant sandbox, plays exactly like Zelda Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom in that respect. Go off. Do stuff, learn, find adventures, progress, upgrade. It's massive, doesn't hold your hand very much and asks you to get on with it.
Watch some early tips videos and they'll help you a massive amount.
I think reviewers didn't have enough time with a patched version and gave it 7s or 8s.
I'm at about an 8.5/10.
Steam has now turned to Mostly positive reviews and gamers are getting through much more of the game.
Honestly. I love it. Weak story let's it down and it does have an odd control scheme.
Buy the physical and trade it off, if you bounce off it. Won't cost your more than some time and about a tenner by the time you've sold it.
Cheers for that mate. All very helpful!View attachment 613215

). Although, as you pointed out... I obviously can't trade it off then if I happen to not like it.Cheers for that mate. All very helpful!
The graphics on console is one of the biggest complaints I've seen. I'm the same as you... base PS5, but with a LG LED TV, so I'm not expecting amazing results lol. Will try everything you suggested though and hopefully see some improvements.
To be honest, I'm more about exploration in sandbox games anyway, so the weak story doesn't bother me too much. I can't even be arsed with boss fights... I just want to explore, do puzzles, collect and upgrade my character. You comparing it to Breath of the Wild is a huge selling point for me
Have been keeping an eye on the secondary market for a cheap-ish copy, but they're not really that much cheaper than the digital version at the moment, so I'm tempted to just go that route to save waiting (I'm super impatient when it comes to games i want to play). Although, as you pointed out... I obviously can't trade it off then if I happen to not like it.
Will see anyway... not sure I can even afford it at the moment, so may not have much choice but to wait!
Thanks again for the info dude![]()

Been waiting for this for so long but not sure i have the time for such a huge game atm!
Love open world games. BOTW and AC Valhalla were great, as is the goat, RDR2! ill shall definitely pick this up for sure. I'm getting fomo atm so maybe sooner rather than laterIt's more to do with how you approach the first few hours. You can do all that's necessary to be able to go off and explore almost immediately but you'll miss out on key stuff. You kind of have to do a fair few things in the beginning hours to allow you to upgrade enough to not get absolutely smashed out in the world. For the most part these early things can be a bit fetch questy and involve some back and forth. To be honest, you need that to learn the hundreds of game mechanics anyway, so this was their way of "teaching". It's like a very large tutorial that can be slightly repetitive.
That's absolutely not the game though. Once the Camp is up and running and you've raised some money and learnt the basics, done some important side quests for gear and skills, just head off.
I mean, you can do that almost immediately anyway and ignore it all. You'd probably get battered after a while so you really need to push over that hump of fetch and learning in the first few hours.
I reckon I felt the game was past those bits by about 3 hours and even then I was fecking around and having fun doing stupid stuff whilst fetching, chopping, building and NPC interaction. I think 6-8 hours was an exaggeration. It didn't feel anywhere near that before I was enjoying the game. Much sooner.
Honestly, the closest games I can compare to are the open world Zelda's and maybe Assassin's Creed Valhalla. This isn't Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 in any way for example. It's not a super immersive sim. Purely an action adventure sandbox.
And it's way better than the usual Ubisoft monotony to be honest. Much better.
It's pretty funny what you can get up to with NPCs too.
If you like the open world Zeldas then you will almost certainly enjoy this.

Well, I caved and bought it digitally... not quite sure if I regret it yet
Never known a game that requires so much messing around just to get it to look/run somewhat smoothly. None of the advice I found online quite suited my taste, so I ended up going back and forth adjusting everything to my own liking, but the graphics still look kinda dogsh!t and I either have to have it super bright so I can see in the dark, or have it super dark so that it doesn't blind me.....there's no in between. As I was warned, the controls are really finicky and clunky, even more-so than I expected. There's loads of different button combos to remember for certain abilities etc as well, so I'm probably gonna forget half of them and therefore just not use them lol.
I've only just got to the point in the story where you get your wings anyway, so still very early days. Hopefully I can get passed the way it looks/run and adapt to the controls so that I can at least enjoy exploring.
