NetMovies Entertainment Inc. and Disney Media Distribution, a division of The Walt Disney Company Latin America, have signed an agreement allowing NetMovies subscribers to stream major Disney movies and ABC TV programs.

Titles include the first three movies in the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise, Wild Hogs and repurposed episodes of ABC TV’s “Desperate Housewives,” “Criminal Minds” and “Brothers and Sisters,” among others.

Launched in São Paulo, Brazil, in 2004 as a by-mail DVD and Blu-ray Disc subscription service, NetMovies currently boasts a catalog of 35,000 titles, including an unknown number of titles for streaming on PCs and connected TVs.

“This relationship with Disney solidifies our stance as the market leader in Brazil and reinforces our dedication to bring our customers the best entertainment in the fastest windows possible,” Daniel Topel, founder and CEO of NetMovies, said in a statement.

Netflix earlier this month launched its streaming service in 43 Latin America countries, beginning in Brazil.

BTIG Research analyst Richard Greenfield, who broke the news about the Disney-NetMovies deal in a Sept. 26 blog post, said the rental service earlier this month upped disc availability in all 20 Brazilian states — nearly double the territories from 2010.

NetMovies’ monthly streaming-only service is available for R$9.99, compared with R$14.99 for Netflix Instant Watch.

“We do believe the Netflix streaming service does have some, if not all, of the titles NetMovies will be offering from Disney,” Greenfield wrote. “It remains unclear how well financed NetMovies is and thus what its ability will be to add more content.”
