Hirokazu Hamamura, president of Famitsu publisher Enterbrain, told reporters earlier today that he expects the PlayStation 3 to sell about 500,000 units by the end of the year, largely because of the popularity of Final Fantasy XIII and the new lower price of the PS3. With the recent price drop, the PS3 has sold more than 150,000 units in Japan during the first week of September.

If Sony is able to push 500,000 units, it would represent 15% of the 3.28 million current PS3 units. The release of FFXIII on December 17 in Japan will be huge for Sony, and the special hardware bundles that combine both the new PS3 and the game will likely have a large impact on sales.

Finally, sales analysts are indicating that the PS3 could reach the 4.5 million mark by the end of the year, and 5 million by the end of the fiscal year.
