A quick background of my setup. I bought an old house 4 years w/ my girlfriend and her kids. When touring the house the first time, I noticed wall plate covers on the ceiling and started churning an idea in my head, that this big room was use for a projector and screen. After moving in, I started throwing the idea around of the ultimate screen and projector combo, which was shot down quickly, every time. Giving up on the idea, and being busy with my new lifestyle of living with girlfriend, I settled fr a nice tv.

Well time went by and we had a nasty split and she moved out. Now the house was mine and I could do what I want. However, financial situations changed, forcing me to add a roommate. And since this roommate was my best friend and both of us living it up like bachelors do, my money was spent on the bar scene and other scenes, none which had saving planned. Instead of saving for my long term goal, I went with a quick resolution, getting a 3d tv and then adding a 7.0 speaker setup.

This was fine as I wasn't home often between work and socializing. However all this socializing lead to one night my buddy meeting his now wife and moving out. He moved out and another financial change came, but this one was different as I started budgeting my finances. After a while my goal came back to adding my long awaited screen and projector. Wanting to do it right I started researching on this build and saw it will take awhile and some money to get it right. Finally after a year of savings and planning, I saved up for phase 1 of my 3 phases.

My setup will include my tv for daytime viewing as well as video games. I'll have a 16:9 120" diagonal screen and a 2.35:1 115" diagonal screen. Both motorized and both hidden above my tv in a soffit. The soffit and screen wall will be painted black, a plush black rug will be laid on my tile in front of the tv/screens, new blinds will be added on my 2(!) sliding doors (they're side by side) and black out curtains will be hung in front of blinds to kill all light. The same curtains will be hung in the doorway leading to my kitchen, and the cutout that looks into the kitchen sink. Finally to cover my bedroom door, yet keep it white, a nice velvet curtain.

Anyways if you're still reading my story, phase 1 started today. All pics are taken via iphone 4s, so not to sexy.

Thanks. Finishing the touches on the painting today. Will be reconnecting everything and using the tv for awhile. I have the JVC rs57 on pre order so I figure by the end of December I'll have my pj. As for screens I'll probably have to wait a few months in looking at the Stewarts or Da-lite's but want the higher gain screens. In the meantime I'll be browsing overstock and looking for deals on curtains and rugs.

In my awesome happiness of typing this build a thread up, I failed my spelling on the title. However, instead of meaning "Lair" I will stick with layer as in the layers of screens I one day hope to have.

Anyways onward to painted pics. The black is called "Black, Black" in Home Depots system. The wall was primed with Gliddens Gripper Grey flat primer.

Head on:

I'm very pleased with how the soffit turned out.
this will pretty much put an end to construction updates until I add 5' of velvet on the ceiling (a down the road project). Until then its a adding things / cosmetics updates. None the less...the soffit crown molding.

Thanks. I'm pretty pumped about it. Just wish I had enough to do it all at once. Gin g to be slow from here on out. Though I'm pretty sure I settled on Dalites Tendion contour hd pro 1.3.

Looks great bud! I like the colors you chose. I usually don't care for black like that but it goes very well with the other color you chose. Great job on the crown molding.

Man once construction is done, things sure slow down. I'm waiting on my projector which looks to be pushed a couple of weeks. In the meantime I'm slowly adding ideas and improvements I can do in my head and making a list of it. I've started measuring out screen sizes and getting quotes so I can start a savings plan. I did get some velvet drape swatches from Half Price Drapes (20% off velvet drapes until Jan. 1st )

I was originally going for a dark purple or blue but against the black wall the black velvet and dark blue velvet look identical. I went with the burgundy and these will hang to the right and left of my soffit. The left just for making it symmetrical with the right, that will be covering my white bedroom door.

Well this week was fun. Started on Monday morning when my projector was suppose to be delivered, UPS status update said due to adverse weather won't be delivered until Tuesday. Crazy thing was it was 75 and sunny in AZ all week and all weekend. Plus the package was scanned as arrival on Sunday. So one day it was pushed no biggie. Come home from work and open my door to see smoke in my house and electrical burning somewhere. My boxer going crazy and me realizing my nightmare is coming true trying to find the source of burning, couldn't find anything. Called 911 and the Calvary came. Three trucks, two chiefs, ambulance and crisis manager. Turns out my lower element on my water heater burned. So had to get a new water heater Tuesday. And some iffy electrical wiring was brought to our attention due to the water heater so now an electrician is coming out tomorrow to change all my breakers. Since he's there I threw in some dimmers though I'd rather wait until I could really afford them, I'm now getting my stage lights put on Lutron Maestro ir remotes as well as other rooms. But because the firefighters recommended not turning on the electricity until the electrician comes out I've been at my parents. So there's been that for a week and now I'm finally opening my package. First pic (due to disability I can't really do much more till help comes)

Thanks! I got a few things to put up to enhance the theater feeling and of course more pics of this projector
