I'm in Canada. I've ordered through amazon.jp several times and they've always shipped in a cardboard box (with the steel plastic sealed to another piece of cardboard to [prevent it from moving around.
I never had to mark it as a gift.

Trouble is anyone in the UK ordering from Amazon Japan always gets hit by custom charges simply because they use DHL. Anyone in the UK knows the score so I don't waste my time ordering from amazon japan. The items are dear to begin with and even dearer by the time customs hit me.
