Battlefield 3
is the true successor to Battlefield 2. Beyond our signature multiplayer, we have also included a full single-player campaign and a co-op campaign – all straight out of the box. As for fan favorite features, how does the return of jets, prone, and 64-player multiplayer (on PC) sound? All this built with our powerful new game engine Frostbite 2, which you'll hear and see a lot of in the months leading up to launch.

Battlefield 3 will release this Fall.

The new GameInformer issue is out and folks have already provided scans of the article, which include plenty of great-looking screenshots. Furthermore, these details were obtained from the article:

Aiming for Fall 2011 release

4 classes

Concept for BF3 has been in the works for years, waiting on proper tech to seamlessly come together

Frostbite 2.0 is the culmination of this tech, entirely re-written

Lighting sounds neat, one “probe” contains more lighting information than an entire BFBC2 level.

Level destruction is going to be “believable” but basically everything is destructible.

Character animations powered by ANT, what EA Sports uses.

AI characters and multiplayer characters have different animation sets

No more “gliding” animations that look off, animation realism is a focus

Captured their own war audios (bullets, tanks, helicopters, etc) at different distances to ensure realism

Better audio cues for certain actions, more easily able to listen for threats

Plan on better, more immediate post release content

More unlocks than Bad Company 2

Dice trying to find a good balance between customization of your character and not having “pink rabbit hat(s)”

Will have co-op

There will be a kill-cam but it can be turned off

BF3′s team is almost twice as big as the team for BFBC2

They want the pacing of the single player mode to be balanced, with highs and lows. Makes the comparison to a song vs a guitar solo.

Part of the single player mode takes place in Sulaymaniyah (Iraqi Kurdistan).

Will be M rated

PC version is lead version

No mod tools at release.

DICE hasn't done prone on consoles because they think it adds too many issues to gameplay, they say they have listened to fans that have complained so we will see, but I can't see them not putting it in when Battlefield 2 had it.

They said they would have prone in this one. They didnt have it before because of a lot what Cali said, primarily it was cause they didnt want snipers doing it kinda ruining games making them extra hard to kill.

IDK if I'm happy about it or not?? I'm sure Mexi is! :p I do wish they would get a female soldier!!

Battlefield 3 "superior" to Call of Duty, says EA boss

Battlefield 3 is a “flat out superior game” to competing shooter Call of Duty, says Electronic Arts CEO John Riccitiello.

Speaking with investors earlier today, the executive spoke of the publishing behemoth’s intention of taking a substantial bite out of Activision’s dominance in the FPS landscape, and firmly believes Battlefield 3 is more than up to the task.

"We know we have a big competitor," he commented. "But head-to-head with Call of Duty in Q3, we have the superior game engine, a superior development studio, and a flat out superior game. Our goal is to significantly gain share in the huge FPS category and to put the other team on defense."

Furthermore, Riccitiello observed that pre-orders for Battlefield 3 have effortlessly eclipsed those of its predecessor, noting pre-sales for the game are up a whopping 700 percent “versus the same period before the launch of Battlefield: Bad Company 2.”

“A lot of people are telling us they want to play this game on day one,” he added.

Riccitiello said earlier this year that EA and Activision would be splashing out roughly $200 million in combined marketing efforts for Battlefield 3 and the new Call of Duty, the latter of which has yet to see a formal reveal.

Analyst says EA could annualize the Battlefield series

Electronic Arts’ Battlefield series might become an annual affair in the near future, Janco Partners analyst Mike Hickey has suggested.

Writing in a research note (via CVG), Hickey reckons there’s a high chance the celebrated shooter may go down a similar path to that of Activision’s Call of Duty franchise.

"We suspect they could release a Battlefield franchise game annually, switching between Battlefield and Bad Company versions, similar to how Activision manages their Call of Duty franchise," wrote Hickey.

Both EA and Activision are gearing up for a first-person punch-up later this year with the release of Battlefield 3 and 2011’s as-of-yet-unannounced Call of Duty, respectively.

EA is particularly proud of its contender, though, and has been beating its chest as of late by saying that it believes its product is “flat out superior” to Activision’s venerable FPS.

I dunno man, the difference is their games arent "Arcade-y" and their graphics engine already looks awesome as well as their destruction engine. I see them being wayyyy more successful releasing every year as opposed to COD in terms of quality.

Well I may have called it ........... Battlefield 3 listing shows Dec. 31st 2011 date now, which by now you should know that means they got no clue when it will release if at all in 2011.

or has it always shown that????? :p

I dunno wreck but I think it's a HUGE mistake releasing after MW. Once again they have beat us to the punch. The only way they can beat the CoD series is to release before their releases. People are gonna buy CoD no matter how bad the last one was and if it is decent then people will not be ready to move on to BF if they have interest. On the other hand if BF beat CoD to a release date then people may feel the same way and not bother with the next CoD game.
