They look wider with that squarish shape on it. BD G2 size isn't that tall, so when a square is added, it reveals to our mind/eye just how short they are, making them seem wide.
Plus we're used to the proper big boxes by now.

So very strangely all the film vault steelbooks have appeared on Whsmith website!
They are £40 though.

Just got in to collecting and bought BR and 3 others from whsmith - are they bad? Should I cancel?

Nope. It's just that they usually sell Books, Stationary and Magazines.
Media is unusual for them.

years ago they used to sell records tape cds dvds films and by that you can tell how old i am
and whsmiths is at least 40 years old
if they getting back into media i say fair play

Er, just a tad more than that! It was established in 1792, so 232 years ago now! Not sure they were selling records, tapes, CDs and DVDs back then though!!
