Classic movie label the Criterion Collection is to launch on Blu-ray in the U.K. on April 18 following a multi-year home entertainment distribution pact with Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. Until now Criterion has only been available in the U.S. and Canada.

SPHE will bring selected titles from Criterion’s extensive catalog and future new release slate to the U.K. for the first time. The first wave of films, featuring all the supplements from the U.S. editions along with their exclusive artwork and packaging, are “Grey Gardens,” “It Happened One Night,” Roman Polanski’s “Macbeth,” “Only Angels Have Wings,” “Speedy” and “Tootsie.”

Criterion Collection chief executive officer Jonathan Turell said: “We are excited to launch the Criterion Collection in the U.K. Starting with these six great titles, we are happy to be able to bring selections from Criterion to our very devoted audience in the U.K. We are thrilled to build upon our strong relationship with Sony and look forward to expanding the Criterion audience.”

“Criterion represents the very best of classic and contemporary filmmaking and we are delighted to bring this prestigious collection to the U.K. for the first time,” added Aodan Coburn, executive VP, international, SPHE. “This partnership demonstrates SPHE’s continued commitment to growing our distribution business.”

Are you going for any of these mate. I already have the Artificial Eye Release for Ivan's Childhood. I'm guessing the Criterion will be better, I don't think it's a film I would double dip on though.
I'll more than likely go for both once they're in one of the 2 for £25 sales. I hear the only real difference between both Ivan's Childhood releases are the special features... I don't own the film at all though and I really want to check it out, so will definitely pick up Criterion's. Have you ever seen 3:10 to Yuma? I really enjoyed the remake, so am very interested in checking out the original.

Yeah it's always best to wait for the sale. You know they are going to end up their so it's hard to pay full price! Lol. I enjoyed Ivan's Childhood, it's interesting as it's Tarkovsky's first film. Some of the camera work is fantastic considering it's age but it's not something I would rewatch a lot if I'm honest.
I haven't seen 3:10 to Yuma mate, I must admit I'm not big on westerns. I like the odd one but I haven't seen too many. I have started watching more since I saw Django unchained and The Hateful Eight, they gave me the taste for it! Lol,:D

Yeah, I'd never pay full price for a Criterion... and not just because of the regular sales, but because £18 is way too much anyway IMO. I'm a bit on fence about Ivan's Childhood to be honest, because the only Tarkovsky film I've seen so far is Solaris, and that's considered one of his best, yet I wasn't a fan unfortunately. I really want to check out more of his work though, just to be sure whether I'm definitely not a fan of his or not.

I hear ya mate... I've never been huge on westerns either, but I have gotten in to them a lot more over the last year or so, mostly because my dad keeps recommended them to me lol.

Haha yeah it's usually reccomendations that get you into something! They are too pricey, they are nice editions but not with £18 a pop.

Solaris is pretty slow, I watched that later than some of his others. I liked some parts but it definatly requires a lot of patience. I still haven't seen all his movies yet but I found Ivan's Childhood to be one of the easiest to watch. It isn't slow and is quite short. I think it's still worth a shot even if you didn't like Solaris.:)

A lot seem to agree about the cost of each title, and with the regular 2 for £25 sales, I don't see why anyone would pay £18 for them. They should definitely rethink their pricing... I'd probably actually buy some of them on release if they dropped the RRP to around £15.

Ha yeah, I kept dozing during Solaris... will give it another go at some point though, and hopefully I enjoy it more when I do. I actually just remembered earlier today that I picked up Stalker from the recent sale, so I'll give that a watch soon and maybe it'll confirm whether or not his films are for me.

Yeah it would help if they were a little cheaper from the start. I'm sure more people would bite earlier!
Solaris was very slow, I liked it but I'm not sure I could rewatch it too many times. I think you should get a good idea after Stalker, that's also pretty slow paced but all his films are really. The camera work is excellent though. I hope you do enjoy it mate!:)

Many thanks. Cancelled my amazon order for the forthcoming two Criterions on Monday and got the discount. Nice 25% saved and I ordered 4 titles I didn't have on the two for 25 quid.

Looks like NOTLD might be a digipak if the below image is anything to go by, as there's no sign of the plastic scanavo case around the edges - similar to how Dr Strangelove's mock-up was, which obviously turned out to be a digi.
