I hadn't even heard of this until now, so I'm guessing many of you have never heard of it either. It's called Extra Life. Here is some information on them.
Extra Life is a sponsored 24 hour gaming marathon for charity. Sarcastic Gamer ran this event last year and raised over $120,000 (yes, it's an american effort, but just because you don't live in America doesn't mean you can't get involved) to fight paediatric cancer. They're asking anyone and everyone to sign up here, and get at least 4 of your friends and family to sponsor you $1 an hour each, so you could raise $92 to fight paediatric cancer by playing games. On 17th October, people from gaming communities from across the globe will sit down and play video games to raise money for Texas Children's hospital.
