Final Fantasy XIII is an upcoming console role-playing game being developed by Square Enix. It will be released exclusive for PlayStation 3 in Japan, then for PlayStation 3 worldwide in Europe and North America. First appearing at the 2006 E3, the game features a futuristic, high-tech world.

Final Fantasy XIII is the flagship title of the Fabula Nova Crystallis Final Fantasy XIII collection. The game shares a common mythology with Final Fantasy Agito XIII and Final Fantasy Versus XIII, but they are not directly related to each other. Motomu Toriyama, a director and scenario writer of previous Final Fantasy titles, will direct and write the game's story.

The concept for Final Fantasy XIII's battle system is to maintain the strategic nature of command-based battles. The system stemmed from a desire to create battles similar to those found in Final Fantasy VII Advent Children. Like those in Final Fantasy XII, battle sequences are integrated into the world environment. The Active Time Battle (ATB) system will return, but is expected to work differently from its predecessors.

The battle system that was shown during the E3 2006 trailer was only a prototype. Recently, Square Enix showed battle footage in various Japanese magazines and trailers which introduced a new interface. You can only control one character at a time in battle, although battle parties of up to three characters have been shown. You can stack up to three commands per turn and release them all at the same time to form a combo. These commands include series staples such as Attack, Fire, Blizzard and Cure, as well as new ones such as Launch, which sends the enemy up in the air. The game does not make use of MP but introduces "cost points" for each command. Cost points determine how many times the commands can be used per turn. The overclock gauge from the prototype battle system is replaced with a break bar. The minimap shown earlier has also disappeared from the battle interface. The player is able to view the HP and name of the enemy before engaging it in battle. When the player engages an enemy, the camera moves to another position and the battle menu appears, making the battle transitions nearly seamless.

The classic summoned creatures will return in Final Fantasy XIII. Carbuncle emerges from a disc-like object when it is touched by the character Vanille, Ifrit and Siren also appear doing performances in a trailer. Shiva will return and takes the form of a pair of sisters who can merge into a motorcycle, which the character Snow rides, and can use ice to create a path to drive on.

FFXIII responds to review scores

The key developers of Square Enix's Final Fantasy XIII have revealed they "try not to listen to the critics too much" - and responded to criticism of the game's linear nature.

Producer Yoshinori Kitase told CVG sister mag Xbox World 360: "We try not to listen to the critics too much. Most of the criticisms have come because the first half of the game is very linear.

"But we've got a story to tell, and it's important the player can engage with the characters and the world they inhabit before letting them loose..."

The game's director Motomu Toriyama added: "We think many reviewers are looking at Final Fantasy XIII from a western point of view. When you look at most Western RPGs, they just dump you in a big open world, and let you do whatever you like... [It] becomes very difficult to tell a compelling story when you're given that much freedom."

They might have a point - reviewers don't seem to be able to make up their mind on the title.

As reported by CVG, GamesMaster's Final Fantasy XIII review gave the game a respectable 81%, but PSM3 was less enamoured, awarding just 70%.

However, the Official PlayStation Magazine's Final Fantasy XIII review gave the game a 9/10, saying it "makes the hours pass likes minutes".

Honestly, I don't think it's going to be bad from reviews. Maybe some people rushed it and didn't take in the experience. Just like movie reviews. You could have a film that gets a bad rep from critics, but everybody here loves it! This isn't the first game to get mediocre reviews and to have the community like it more.

No. You won't have a problem with that. Only a few FF games were connected. FF7 had a psp game that was connected with FF7. And on ps2 there was FFX and FFX-2 that were connected. They all pretty much start with a new world, characters, etc.

FF Versus XIII may not show up at E3, says Nomura

Final Fantasy Versus XIII director Tetsuya Nomura has informed the folks over at Famitsu magazine that the eagerly awaited PS3 exclusive may not show its face at E3 due to recent development changes.

Apparently these changes pertain to the World Map, which originally featured a miniature version of protagonist Noctis running around in a similar vein to a previous title in the franchise. The team later changed this segment to resemble a style seen in another unknown Final Fantasy title.

As a result, the game may not make an appearance at the mammoth trade show later this year. Nomura previously commented that the game would show up at E3 providing the development team was “quick enough.”

Colour us disappointed. Still, we'll be sure to update you on the game's development as soon as we hear anything.

what did i say like a day or two ago? everytime i read news about sqaure = disappointed me.

i wonder how much that decision has set back this game...

i would much rather have had versus come out than XIV

Insomniac: FFXIII "superior" on PS3

James Stevenson, community boss over at Insomniac Games, has tweeted that he feels the PlayStation 3 version of eagerly anticipated RPG Final Fantasy XIII is superior to its Xbox 360 counterpart.

Stevenson made the comment while heaping praise on Sony’s Q1 2010 line-up, where he wrote: “PS3 is having a rockin’ 1st q: MAG, Heavy Rain, White Knight Chronicles, and soon MLB10:The Show, GOWIII and the superior version of FFXIII“

Still, he also tipped his hat to the folks at Microsoft, adding: “Fair enough, the 360 also got Mass Effect 2, now one of my all-time favorites from this gen. Plenty of good gaming. Except on Wii.”

Final Fantasy XIII assaults store shelves on March 9.

good to hear, but hmmm, think hes biased? a sony exclusive dev saying the ps3 version is better? would be more significant if he said the opposite: 360 version superior.
