The Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) might be the largest event on the video game industry calendar, but it isn't the only one. Besides the Tokyo Game Show in September, there is a young upstart conference in Europe called GamesCom. This publicity extravaganza will happen in Cologne, Germany, so we can be sure that attendees will smell nice while they check out hundreds of booths from companies around the world. Interestingly, Sony has booked a massive 3-hour press conference for August 18th, the day before the conference kicks off for the general public. People are extremely curious about what Sony might reveal at this unlikely venue, especially since Microsoft and Nintendo have nowhere near the same presence on the GamesCom stage.

Traditionally, Europe has been a very stong market for Sony, so a mega announcement here does kind of make sense. Also, given the massive leaks that occurred just before E3, perhaps Sony wanted some time to prepare a proper announcement at a less frenetic event.

We think that there is a strong possiblity that Sony will finally take the wraps off of its rumored PS3 Slim. After all, we already learned about the PSP Go at E3, so the company wouldn't need 3 hours to talk about changes to its handheld gaming system. This would be a good time to announce a price cut for holiday 2009 as well, in case Sony was planning on dropping the price of its PS3 hardware.

Those two megaton announcements would be awesome, but hardly enough to fill a 3-hour conference. We're sure that Sony will showcase some of its upcoming titles in greater detail. We expect to get a closer look at MAG and The Agent, for example. There may even be some changes coming the Playstation Network or Home services, similarly to Microsoft's dashboard experience upgrade.

No matter what happens, one thing is certain: gamers now have a major mid-summer press event to look forward to.

New PSN game from SSDHD Dev

The developer of the very popular Super Stardust HD PSN game, Housemarque, has recently told Digital Foundry that they plan on announcing a new title at GamesCon in Cologne, Germany. GamesCon, formerly called Leipzip Games Convention, will take place between August 19-23. The announcement comes at the end of a discussion about Super Stardust HD.

The emphasis in the here and now however is on something that PS3 owners should be getting very excited about…

“We are currently concentrating on new game projects and I am happy to say that we will be announcing something at gamescom in Cologne,” revealed Kuittinen. “All I can say right now is that it is a PS3 PSN exclusive title we have been working on quite a while now, and yes… shooting is an integral part of the game…”

However, it is not confirmed whether or not this announcement will take place during Sony’s 3 hour private conference, booked for the 18th. Either way, this is great news for PS3 gamers, as Super Stardust HD was arguably the first successful PSN title, one that received high ratings and multiple support in the form of DLC. Add this to the list of things to look forward to at GamesCon this year, and stay tuned for more on what will be announced there for the PS3.

I think they should just attack the issue of the slim head on and announce it. They're AMAZING announcement of the GO! was trashed, they need to just spring this on us...

+1

They wont do it though, if they will announce it, it will be during their 3 hour conference. I hope they just come out swinging and announce it first.

Capcom announces GamesCom lineup

Capcom announced today its lineup for this year’s GamesCom held August 19-23 in Cologne. It appears Capcom is pulling out all the stops for some of its biggest upcoming PlayStation 3 games, including Dark Void, Lost Planet 2, and MotoGP 09/10.

Dark Void is a third-person shooter that allows the gamer to defy gravity in a unique vertical combat system, all while wearing a jetpack. At GamesCom, visitors can ‘blast off’ in a vertical oriented airstream at 180km/h to get the feeling of flying with a jetpack. The game will be available for demo, of course.

MotoGP 09/10 will make its debut at the show with a playable demo. PlayStation 3 owners can look forward to the multiplayer action title Lost Planet 2. The next installment of Lost Planet offers gamers a new epic challenge with battles erupting on a planetary scale. You’ll journey across a range of harsh environments and defeat giant Akrid in four player co-op.

Capcom will also show off the PC version of Resident Evil 5, and Wii games Monster Hunter Tri, Spyborgs, and Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: Ultimate All Stars.

New Games Announcements?!

In a recent podcast released by IGN, Greg Miller mentions that he went on a “secret Sony Mission,” where he says, “games are coming for systems.” While insanely vague, and completely ambiguous, brace yourself for some new games to be unveiled at the European convention. There is no doubt that a large majority of the hype is surrounding the rumored release of the PS3 slim, but that cat is way out of the bag. Consider this as a rumor for now, but perhaps there will be a few surprises for gaming fans come August 18th. Below is a summary of the podcast.

From IGN’s Podcast Beyond Episode 102:

20:26 Greg Miller: I went on a secret Sony mission yesterday; I saw a bunch of their games. There’s a lot of stuff going on.

28:53 Chris Roper: I think we’ve exhausted all the rumors. Is there anything else that we’ve missed?
28:56 Greg Miller: I know things. I can’t say things.
28:58 Chris Roper: You know things?
29:59 Ryan Clements: Interesting.
29:01 Chris Roper: Games are coming for systems. That’s what we know.
29:06 Greg Miller: New announcements coming. At least one.

Even without the Health Ledger reference, there’s a lot to be excited about in the upcoming Gamescom 2009 convention. One of the most exciting things is that IT STARTS THIS WEEK !!!!! And what better way to kick things off then to have EA and Sony give their presentations tomorrow morning, US time. That’s right, folks in the west make sure you wake up early to catch the beginnings of EA’s conference, slated to start at 7:30 PDT (10:30 EDT). Following EA’s conference is Sony, scheduled to start at 9:30 PDT (12:30 EDT).

There is much hype surrounding Sony’s conference, as rumors about the much-talked about PS3 Slim are more widespread than over weight people at Disney World. And now, we are only hours away from finding out if the rumors are true, and a brand new, sleaker and sexier PS3 is headed our ways.

I absolutely love gaming conferences, and this one is sure to be great. Stay tuned to ProjectGamers for the latest on Gamescom 2009. Or if you are bummed that you can’t be there in Cologne, Germany to watch it live, the next best thing is to watch a live broadcast found at Eurogamer.
