Spartacus Star Leaving Series for Health Reasons
Andy Whitfield is dropping out of Season 2, due to the recurrence of cancer.
September 17, 2010

A very unfortunate story to report here, as news comes in that Spartacus: Blood and Sand star Andy Whitfield is dropping out of Season 2 of the series, due to the recurrence of cancer. Deadline is reporting the news, as Whitfield and Starz have put out a joint statement about the situation.

Whitfield was diagnosed with treatable Stage 1 non-Hodgkin lymphoma earlier this year. After his initial treatment, he was in remission and cleared to return to work on Spartacus. In the interim, Starz had delayed production on Season 2 and ordered a prequel series, Spartacus: Gods of the Arena (starring John Hannah and Lucy Lawless), which is currently filming for a January debut.

In the statement released by Whitfield and Starz, they note his doctors have advised he "immediately resume aggressive treatment for a recurrence of cancer."

Said Whitfield, "It's with a deep sense of disappointment that I must step aside from such an exceptional project as Spartacus and all the wonderful people involved. It seems that it is time for myself and my family to embark on another extraordinary journey. Thank you sincerely for the support so far."

"Our hearts and prayers are with Andy and his family during this difficult time," said Starz President and CEO Chris Albrecht. "Andy is not only an incredible actor whose portrayal of Spartacus made an indelible impression on Starz audiences, he is also an amazing human being whose courage, strength, and grace in the face of adversity have inspired all of us."

Starz stresses they have not yet made a decision about how to proceed next, as no doubt the speculation will begin over whether they will recast, delay the series indefinitely or end it all together. "Right now, we just want to extend our concern and support to Andy and his family," said Carmi Zlotnik, Managing Director, Starz Media. "We will address our programming plans at some later date."

Wow what a great show I wish him the best and hope one day he can come back and continue.

Man... he practically IS the show ... just finally watched all of season 1 ... loved it.

I want him and the show back pronto!

Just finished season 1 and started streaming season 2. Anyone know if there are plans to continue the show. What a finale Season 1 had, LOL. I know Andy Whitfield is undergoing a second course of cancer treatment, and I personally hope he recovers well and is able to rejoin the cast at some point-I really like him on the show. Any news on Season 3, or are they waiting to hear how Andy responds to treatment?

Gods of the arena was a prequel. There will be a season 2 though. They already recast the role. Liam McIntyre will be the new Spartacus. And season 2 will be called Spartacus: Vengeance.

Hey Splax-yeah, thought it was cool that they did a prequel until they could decide what to do. Thanks for the info!

I discovered this on Netflix instant too, after a friend suggested it.

Great, great show... despite all the male nudity in it. ;)

It's a shame about Whitfield, he was impressive in the role. Won't be the same without him.

On replacing Andy Whitfield:

Per Thewrap:

"DeKnight understands that audiences might greet the switcheroo, necessary as it might have been, with skepticism.

"I absolutely expect resistance," DeKnight conceded. "It's absolutely impossible to replicate your lead actor and not expect some reluctance [on the audience's part]."

It wasn't easy for DeKnight and the "Spartacus" crew to accept a new Spartacus, either. "We had many, many dark nights of the soul [while deciding what to do about the series]," DeKnight recalled. "We came very, very close to closing up production permanently."

Unltimately, DeKnight was encouraged that Whitfield himself gave his blessing to the replacement.

"[Whitfield] got in touch with us and said, 'I love this story, I love the character, and I want to see it played all the way through, and you have my full support to do that," DeKnight said.

DeKnight further revealed that, when circumstances permit, he and Whitfield plan to collaborate in the future.

"I have the utmost faith that Andy and I will work together again," DeKnight divulged."

I loved Sparticus:Blood and Sand. I also loved the prequel, but i will not spend the same amount of money for half of the amount of episodes. The should have reatiled this one at 19.99 not the 39.99 I have been seeing

Spartacus Star Andy Whitfield Dies Spartacus: Blood and Sand actor passes away in Australia at the age of 39.

Very sad news to report tonight, as we've learned that Andy Whitfield, the star of Spartacus: Blood and Sand has died. Whitfield was 39. Whitfield lost his battle with non-Hodgkin Lymphoma on Sunday in Sydney, Australia. The Associated Press reports that his wife, Vashti, issued a statement in which she called her husband a "beautiful young warrior" who died on a "sunny Sydney morning" in the "arms of his loving wife."
