By the way this was apparently made on less than $10M budget!!! Looks absolutely stunning and is 3 hours and 35 minutes long!

Oh A24 you know how to make me happy

Peak cinema. Writing, acting, direction all superb. Beautifully shot movie, highlights were the locations & lighting which were especially amazing in equal measure. Brody was fantastic. Score and ambience incredible too. Just elite Filmmaking. Great idea to pop an intermission in too. Highly recommend.

Note: Saw it in IMAX... if possible do the same. You won't regret it, if you appreciate great cinematography.

I didn't expect to like this one, or even bear through the whole 3 and a half hours, but I did, albeit in two evenings. I split long ones in halves all the time, but this one is split in two on its own, like good old movies used to.
It's what I'd call a 'real film', not those superfluous digital streaming 'toys', not 'content' for the brainless zombie couch potato, but a real feature, a strong drama, that even though might seem as if it's slow or not showing much of anything, the essence and story is powerful and involving, with masterful acting.
A few things I don't like about it, is it's perpetuating an old cliche - that all rich people are bastards, rapists, racists, and treat immigrants like trash or something they can use and throw away. I do not support such liberal propaganda, but I suppose a cliche had to have come from somewhere, such things must have happened sometimes, so OK, whatever.
I also didn't like the ending for Van Buren character - it's a writer's cop out.

Guy Pearce must have been triggered by his character to suddenly come after Kevin Spacey, and kick him while he's down - not cool at all.

Otherwise I don't see why it would be called depressing or a depiction of how it's all so bad for poor immigrants. Seems it all worked out just fine for the characters, rather very well even. Spoiler alert, I guess. This isn't Schindler's List, some people need to get a grip, all first generation immigrants struggle somewhat, while settling down and establishing themselves.

Yeah, I've got to find a realistic 4 hour window to watch this.
I might set my alarm for 4am on my day off. Make a pot of coffee and watch it before the world gets up.
