I haven't seen many of William Friedkin's films - only this year added To Live and Die in LA and The French Connection to my collection for the first time - but what I did see, I liked a lot. Especially Jade with Linda Florentino, and The Rules of Engagement with Sam Jackson and Tommy Lee Jones.

RIP

'Sorcerer' (1977) is a gem. Anyone not seen it, find a copy. Most won't be disappointed. On par with the French original, 'The Wages of Fear', but Friedkins take oozed that insipid, greasy 70s grime. Wonderful stuff.
astonishing film, Sorceror. the title doesn't really make much sense for the content (i know why it's called that, but it doesn't work for me - 'The Wages of Fear' is a much better title) and i am sure contributed to its poor initial box office. well, that and a small film called Star Wars opening the same summer.

i love the way the narrative unfolds with no exposition or explanation, you learn as the film goes on - superb direction, just like in The French Connection. Roy Scheider and the other cast members look genuinely shattered throughout, he really put them through the ringer. and the practical effects work is right up there with the best ever filmed. agree, all, do seek it out if you don't know it. this is the edition i own and it's really good (amaray).

RIP indeed.

The 4k restoration on the Blu Ray release is particularly outstanding. Colour reproduction is phenomenal and such a universal jump over the old DVD print which I first saw some 20 odd years ago.
With sadness on Friedkins passing, perhaps now we might get the full 4K print of Sorcerer released in memoriam.
Who knows. For now the Blu Ray is top notch and pretty cheap at that.

The original 'Wages of Fear' 1953 Henri Clouzot is also worth viewing. Although slightly different in tone, with the original for me the more suspenseful version of the two due to inventive work arounds because of budgetry implications; both films still carry the downbeat sweat of desperation that men carry at rock bottom. The single glimmer of hope still lit, if only you could just...keep...moving forward...slowly, very, very slowly.

Looks interesting, and a quality and cheap Blu-ray edition, thanks!

Saw this floating around on Twitter earlier and thought you'd all enjoy

William Friedkin gave the best interviews:shipped:

Adored this man!
I’ve been watching loads of his interviews on the bird app and they are incredible. Completely unhinged and from the heart. The interview with Refn will actually make you dislike Refn a bit, the way he bangs on about only god forgives as a masterpiece. But Friedkins replies are amazing. Puts him in his place. Also that man hated all the exorcist sequels lol and rightly so...

Also not seen sorcerer but since his death keep hearing it’s an absolute masterpiece from a few directors on twitter and some of you guys here so thanks for the tip. Added to the watch list

Wow, Winding-Refn does look like an ass, like a grown up bitter Millhouse from the Simpsons.
I liked the mother character from Only God Forgives, reminded me of my own, but I hated the ending, and the movie as a whole - it's the director's worst.

It was a joke interview between two friends... neither of them were being serious

Alright, 'cause I do like his other films, and most of all the TV-movie series Too Old to Die Young!
Which reminds me of Copenhagen Cowboy miniseries, that was released this January, still gotta see that.
