Netflix Buys ‘Knives Out’ Sequels for $450 Million

Netflix is plunking down an astounding $450 million for the rights to “Knives Out 2” and “Knives Out 3,” the next two follow-ups to the 2019 murder mystery, sources tell Variety. The films will reunite director Rian Johnson and star Daniel Craig, who teamed up so memorably on the first detective story.

The first “Knives Out” was produced by Media Rights Capital. It was distributed by Lionsgate, going on to earn $311.4 million on a $40 million budget. Johnson was nominated for an Oscar for best original screenplay. It was not immediately clear who benefits from the massive windfall, as MRC is said by sources to have acquired the rights to the material from Johnson and his producing partner Ram Bergman.

The film gives Netflix a splashy new film series as it faces more competition in the streaming space, especially on the international front. In recent months, new challengers such as HBO Max, Disney Plus and Apple TV Plus have emerged to challenge Netflix’s dominance. This is one of the biggest deals ever made for the rights to a movie series.

Craig will reprise his role as private detective Benoit Blanc. The films give Craig a new series to segue into as he wraps up his five-film stint as James Bond with “No Time to Die,” which will open in theaters this fall after numerous delays due to COVID-19. One executive at a Netflix competitor, well-versed in the franchise space, said that the deal’s eye-popping price tag could involve millions in marketing commitments to eventize the film around the world. They also noted that for talent like Craig, salary bumps for second and third sequels can grow astronomically — often eclipsing entire production budgets. The actor made north of $20 million on recent sequels in the James Bond franchise.

Johnson previously directed “Star Wars: The Last Jedi,” “Looper” and “Brick.” He envisioned “Knives Out” as an Agatha Christie-style whodunit. In a 2019 interview with Variety, Johnson said he’d “…be thrilled to do another ‘Knives Out’ every few years.”

The first film centered on an eccentric mystery writer who is murdered in his house. His money-grabbing family finds itself under suspicion. The all-star ensemble included Jamie Lee Curtis, Chris Evans, Ana de Armas, Michael Shannon, Don Johnson, Toni Collette, Lakeith Stanfield, and Christopher Plummer.

It is unclear if the films will have a theatrical release in addition to their streaming runs on Netflix.

ridiculous.

The first one cost 40 million, what on earth do they want to do with the next 2 for them to cost 225 million each? James Bond or what?

yeah, 450 million for a couple movies, that's just what our race needs right now, **** all the poor people, lets just waste a bunch of money on some movies! Fantastic!

See someone saying that they’d love to see a knives out film with muppets and the only human is Craig as Blanc and I’d be so down for that. That would work amazingly

So the first film named after a Radiohead song, perfect. Sequel after a Beatles song, cool.
Third after a U2 song LOL. U f**king 2!
Absolute downgrade

Reminds me of that music documentary called it might get loud. It’s Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin, jack white of the white stripes and then The Edge!

And he’s very out of place

I bet Glenn Close or Andrew Scott are going to be the killer(s)...
Cailee Spaeny, whose name sounds like a mix of weed and type of bologna, is everywhere for some reason. In old Hollywood I'd assume she sucks a lot... I mean gives good head. :naughty:

If Glenn Close is the killer it will make sense because...
The killers in the last 2 movies were both former Marvel Actors! Let's keep the trend going! haha
Captain America, Drax, now Nova Prime!

I think Andrew Scott is the perfect casting for a Knives Out film.

Good cast in whole so far

Everytime I see her name I think of Cali weed. And it don’t help I get about 3 shotta texts a day with Cali on the menu but you really don’t like her do you lol. I feel this comment now makes sense and helps me understand why you have an issue with her in Civil war (the car scene we spoke about) because you just don’t like her.

But this always happens with certain young actors. Some end up everywhere and is in demand. Look at Sydney Sweeney, tom Holland, zendaya and chamalet. F**king everywhere at the moment. Same happens with middle aged actors. Gosling, margo, Reynolds, di caprio. Pitt in his hay day. It’s nothing new

 You're right, I don't.
It's just that my favorite actresses are all old(er) now, and are basically gone off screens, and I don't see many 'replacements'.
There's Samara Weaving and Daisy Edgar-Jones, and... I'm drawing a blank, and no one of Sandra Bullock, Angelina Jolie, Meg Ryan, or Parker Posey level... Only Alicia Vikander probably.
