Classic movie label the Criterion Collection is to launch on Blu-ray in the U.K. on April 18 following a multi-year home entertainment distribution pact with Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. Until now Criterion has only been available in the U.S. and Canada.

SPHE will bring selected titles from Criterion’s extensive catalog and future new release slate to the U.K. for the first time. The first wave of films, featuring all the supplements from the U.S. editions along with their exclusive artwork and packaging, are “Grey Gardens,” “It Happened One Night,” Roman Polanski’s “Macbeth,” “Only Angels Have Wings,” “Speedy” and “Tootsie.”

Criterion Collection chief executive officer Jonathan Turell said: “We are excited to launch the Criterion Collection in the U.K. Starting with these six great titles, we are happy to be able to bring selections from Criterion to our very devoted audience in the U.K. We are thrilled to build upon our strong relationship with Sony and look forward to expanding the Criterion audience.”

“Criterion represents the very best of classic and contemporary filmmaking and we are delighted to bring this prestigious collection to the U.K. for the first time,” added Aodan Coburn, executive VP, international, SPHE. “This partnership demonstrates SPHE’s continued commitment to growing our distribution business.”

You can thank me for this. Whenever I buy one at Amazon for £14.99 a 2 for £25 starts elsewhere... :(
Gah, hate when that happens! It always seems to be the case with me and Zavvi... they're forever reducing their prices just days after I've bought something. :bored:

By the way, the 2 for £25 offer is meant to continue until the end of the month... Zoom are also supposed to be restocking their currently sold out Criterions before then too.

Never gone Criterion before, would love a complete Wes Anderson set but will Tenenbaums be followed by Anderson's other Criterion titles here in the UK?

I'm really hoping they do and I can't see why they wouldn't. Fingers crossed!

Just got the US release of A Brighter Summer Day a while back, nice choice for a UK release it's a strong film.

Going to be watching Tampopo tonight I think... pretty hyped to see the transfer as I've been stuck with the Australian DVD for years. Criterion should try and get their mits on Itami's The Funeral as well!

I've never heard of Jabberwocky before but it sounds decent. Looks a bit like the Monty Python films.
Neither had I mate, and I had the exact same thought about it looking similar to Monty Python (and also Time Bandits)... then I realised it's directed by Terry Gilliam, so I guess that explains it lol.

I'm interested in checking it out anyway. Will you be picking it up? :)
