Being a Japanese steel enthusiast, I wanted to open the floor to everyone who wants to talk about anything Japanese steels.

Share pics (cause mine are terrible quality), ask questions, and maybe learn a thing or two. Heck I wouldn't even think there'd be a problem if you have any really cool slipcovers to

Maybe somebody will even start threads for other countries :)

Hope to hear from y'all soon!

Mike

That is a sweet pic! EEK!

I'm sorry, I might offend someone with this question :)
But what is the deal with the japanese steelbooks? What's the difference between Thor JP and Thor UK for example?

Umm have you seen the pics?!?!?!?!

Just the slip. For some people it's nothing, and for that I am envious. As soon as I saw the JP version I knew I'd never be able to settle for anything else. It's a sickness really. :hilarious:

The writing makes all the difference in the world to me.

Oh and I believe it's quite a lot more limited than the UK version. Only a handful of people on this forum (which is chalked full with phenomenal collections) have the JP version.

Hope this helps

Yes i absoltely agree with slimjim^^

the difference is the slip and the rarity...

either you like it and asian writing or not.and if not you save A LOT OF money XD

Ah, so it's the slip itself that makes it exclusive! I was just curious - would consider me relatively new to collecting :)
Thanks for clearing it up!

No offence at all, very reasonable question. :)

For many, a big attraction of Japanese steels is their quality, which seems to be higher than that typically found on European steels, often with clearer print, less flaws etc. In hand they feel very luxurious and well finished, with even the shrink wrap being tidily applied.

Then there's the attraction of the slips or stickers that differentiate them from other countries' releases. It just makes them more 'exotic' as a package.

Some think the advantages of Japanese steels are worth paying a few $$s more for. Then you get some who will pay literally thousands for those that are from limited runs and are rare or hard to find.

Most are essentially the same steels as much less expensive and more common versions though (like Thor). So it all depends on the level of one's madness. ;)

I hope this thread is created purely appreciation purpose and move away from talking about price and value sort of thing. Kinda boring when come to price and value, thought we already have a thread discussing about value ? ;)

Yes, primarily an appreciation thread hopefully. BUT...

From Mike's OP: "I wanted to open the floor to everyone who wants to talk about anything Japanese steels. Share pics (cause mine are terrible quality), ask questions, and maybe learn a thing or two."

So if one has a valid question specifically about a Japanese steel, where better to post it than here? As with all specialist topic threads, this should be one where members can get help and advice, whether that be info on price, rarity, collectability or any other aspect.

This is now HDN's go-to thread for all things in connection with Japanese steelbooks. So let's not make it one only for people who already have a collection by refusing questions from those who'd like to build one. Ok? ;)

A few questions for those who love their Japanese steels:

1. What is your favourite looking one (with or without slip)?
2. What is the rarest or most expensice one that exists (in your opinion)?
3. What is your favourite film that you own on JP steel?
4. What is your favourite JP steel that you own?

I'll start:
1. LGB, because it looks great and is a worldwide exclusive. Iron Sky a close second for the same reasons...
2. LGB, sealed version - me wants!!! Closely followed by T2 v2.0.
3. At the moment, Unstoppable
4. LGB (not sealed)

1 Thor JP for sure
2 LGB for sure. Even though I think they weren't ever sealed.
3 favorite film on JP steel, ghost protocol (even though I'm not a mission impossible fan)
4 definitely Thor JP!

They were sealed when very first issued. But only something like the first 100 copies I believe. MEGA tough to find and probably one of - if not THE - rarest Japanese steel out there. I'm not even gonna speculate on value ;)

The unsealed ones are relatively easy to get by comparison (though still crazy expensive!).

Yeah I have heard a lot of hype about LGB but its never really been on my radar.

Same with terminator. But that's just me :p

I know many who would love both. I still can't get over how nice ghost protocol is. Way better than I had ever expected.

I need total recall still. That's really the last that I'm missing that I'd like to have sometime. Oh and Paul!

I'm not sure if LGB was sealed when it first release, those ordered directly from Japan mentioned their's came only with clear polybag (unsealed). I have a near miss with an open copy which the seller mentioned it came just like that.
As for T2 V2.0, not hard to get an open copy though but I just can't accept that kind of value for an open copy. That's why I pass on it.

Well, with current time of world we live in. it's easy for us to make all kinds of perception and presumption.
I do not and I cannot stop one from asking question about anything, just my personal point of view.
If anyone think and wish to get help and ask question here, they are free to do so here or anywhere they wish.

If you think my post had in a way makes you feel uneasy, apologise for make you felt that. :p

Full stop.

LOL! We are still at it, arent we? Whether LGB came sealed....I have been on this topic for 6 months already.

I know a collector who has been at it since steelbooks began. He said he bought it directly from Amazon JP on day 1 of the release. It is not shrink-wrap sealed. But the polybag is very high quality (you know, just like JP cd cases seems a little thicker and solid). I also know a low-profile but serious collector (who practically have every grail steel) who also says it never came sealed. Alvin (blackberry) knows another long-time HK collector who also says it never came sealed.

I am not interested in a sealed copy being transacted on the secondary market, because as we know, LTBF was released unsealed, but sealed at the request of the HDN GB participants.

As I have requested a few months back, can any member who bought it directly from Amazon JP on release date and received a sealed copy please raise their hand? No one raised their hand then, will anyone do it now?
