E3 09 - Sony's Conference A+

This year's Electronic Entertainment Expo is taking a giant step towards returning to the glitzy, people-packed shows of three years ago, with attendance expected to be about ten times last year's show and the exhibit halls nearly the same size as the shows that once included ear-splitting rock bands, fire juggling and bikini-clad models.

E3 2009 will also see the return of a more relaxed registration policy for show-goers and rules that once more allow models on the expo floor.

The return to the size and glamor of earlier E3s comes after two years of downsizing and falling attendance at the show that once drew 70,000 people to Los Angeles to revel in all things video game.

In 2006, the Entertainment Software Association announced they would be downsizing the show and moving it to Santa Monica. In 2007, the show returned to the Los Angeles Convention Center, but remained a shadow of its former self. Several developers decided to not attend last year's show, including Activision, Atlus, Bethesda Softworks, NCsoft, Vivendi Games and Warner Bros. Interactive.

This year's list of attendees shows that all but NCsoft are returning to the show.

“The 2009 E3 Expo will be the preeminent North American computer and video game event,” said Michael D. Gallagher, CEO of the ESA. “With robust exhibitor sales, high attendee interest, and strong commitments from multiple industry sectors, we are going to ensure the full excitement and energy of this industry is on display.”

Currently about 70 exhibitors are listed as attending the show, which is more than double the number at last year's. And event organizers say that the floor is filling up quickly.

"We encourage interested companies to contact us because floor sales are going quickly with more than half sold out," a spokesman told me.

Another major change to the show is the new registration policy which has been relaxed to allow more attendees to make it into the show. The last two shows were by invitation only. But this year's show return's to the 2006 policy of allowing people to register to get in.

e3_showfloor.jpg

The show is open to all "credentialed" international and U.S.-based media, industry analysts, retailers, developers and business partners.

Industry professionals need to submit two pieces of identification showing they work in the industry and press credentials are acquired by registering on the site. Both media credentialing and attenddee registration is now official open over on the e3 site.

While the show floor maps aren't yet available on the official site, I've heard that this year's show will essentially be the same size as 2006's convention hall-filling show but without Kentia Hall.

We earlier reported that the second secret title which Capcom will unveil at E3 2009 is non other than Devil May Cry 5, well we contacted Capcom asking for their word on this rumor.

Capcom immediately Replied saying, ‘It’s a title fans have been waiting for, everyone will have to wait until E3 to find out what the secret title exactly is but we can tell it is definitely not Devil May Cry 5′.

There you have it, it’s not Devil May Cry 5 but Capcom stating that ‘It’s what fans have been waiting for‘ certainly excites us and after giving it some thought we came up with 1 title that hasn’t been announced yet and has alot of fans waiting Onimusha 5.

I'm sure everyone has heard a few rumours flying around the interwebs about a lot of hardware announcements at E3 this year. Every console maker has something to be rumoured with Sony having the most. If you want to read on, why wouldn't you, ill let you read about the rumours and how likely they are to actually happen. Oh if I'm wrong I'm sorry, actually just blame Mick.
PSP Slim?

Well what seems to be the most likely, actually its almost guaranteed to happen, is a redesign of the PSP. The PSP "Go!"(what a stupid name by the way), as it has been referred to, has a larger screen, flip or slide out controls and will be UMD less. Ah the UMD a failed attempt at a new format, it sucks the battery and if the rumours are true then this new PSP will have a much longer battery life. The other change that the loss of UMD will make is a focus on Digital Distribution or Memory Cards for physical media in places with major download caps, Australia anyone? This is not a PSP 2, hardware specifications will be minimal at best and no second analogue nub will be added unfortunately.

Likelihood: 95% This has all but been announced.

How smart is it: Very, a move to digital distribution could give the PSP the boost it needs,

PS3 Slim?

Well since we started with the Sony rumours we might as well keep going, a PS3 slim is rumoured to be unveiled at the show. Let me just say that if this is announced it is the stupidest idea in the world ever. I'm not saying that I don't want a slimmer PS3, but there are a lot of more important things that Sony needs to concentrate on.

Something like getting the price down, getting online features that match Xbox Live or making Home actually useful. The PS3 still costs $699 in Australia! I'm the biggest PS3 fan on the site, just go onto the forums and ask anyone but I can see these things are still wrong. Microsoft seems to be in a more likely position to release a slimmer 360. Just to prove how stupid they would be to release a slim now; the PS2 didn't get a slim version til 5 years after its initial release in Japan. The original Playstation had a 5 year gap until the PSone came out. It's only been 3 years since the launch of the Playstation 3; give it at least another year before a slim comes out. But saying all of that it still might be true, a few shots of a PS3 slim on a Chinese production line have been put up on various websites but the whole thing looks a bit suss, I think we will have to wait until E3 to find out the truth.

Likelihood: 50% But please not yet, and not the one in the photos. If it is true it better have a price drop as well.

How smart is it: Yell

Could this be real?
Zune Portable Gaming?

This is a very interesting rumour, Microsoft might be heading into the Portable gaming market with a ZuneX. Honestly, why not? They are competing very well in the console section; I believe an Xbox hand held would be a fantastic thing.

Think of all the Arcade games that could come to a handheld; Not to mention that if Halo or Gears of War were to come to a Handheld. If Microsoft did a handheld right it could be a chart topper. The only problem that could come with them doing a handheld could come by its competition. If it is more powerful than a PSP but only slightly then a lot of PSP ports could come its way. But if it is too costly it might price itself out of the market. There are two things I haven't herd rumours about but would be a given; Xbox Live connectivity and connecting to the 360. Think about that for a second; Keep friends lists on both consoles, transferring games from the Live Arcade and how does cross console chat sound. I think that sounds bloody awesome!

Likelihood: 50% I think this has to happen at some point right? Why not sooner than later.

How smart is it: This would be a great move for Microsoft. The 360's sales would probably have a spike at the same time.

zunex_02
The claimed ZuneX?
Microsoft and Sony motion Controllers?

Now onto Microsoft and Sony together; both of these companies had rumours last year before E3 that they have motion controllers in the works. Guess what, they have resurfaced this year. The main difference between the two years for the Xbox 360 is that instead of the rumour mentioning them copying the Wii controller they are now going the Eye-toy route. This camera will track a person's motion as the input with out having a controller in hand. If this sounds like the Eye toy to you, you're not alone; but the way they work is much different. Instead of showing you on the screen it will match a part of your body to a part in the character you're playing on screen. An example would be having your Left arm to the left arm of a boxer in Fight Night Round 4. Sony seems to be going after the Wii market if the rumours are to be believed, a Playstation 3 version of the Wii controller that "breaks apart" into either 2 or 4 sections has been spotted by focus test groups and has a 1:1 motion ratio.

Likelihood for Microsoft: 60% This is coming at some point why not E3?

How smart is it for Microsoft: Very, the world loves the Wii and with a lower price point there is no reason Microsoft shouldn't do this besides the hardcore would largely ignore it.

Likelihood for Sony: 50% I think this will depends more if Microsoft announces theirs at their conference, which is a day before Sony's.

How smart is it for Sony: Fairly, Sony has a higher price and is seen as a more "premium product" I would like to see a price drop at the same time. But on the other hand this could be the final reason for a family to get this as their living room system.

xbox_360_motion
Is this the rumoured motion camera?

So What About a Motion Controller on the PS2?

I'm going to add a bit of fuel to the fire here, if Sony is making a motion controller. Why not make it so that the PS2 can use it as well? At $199 with a motion controller and some similar games as the Wii, (Pii sports anyone) I think this would be a massive hit for Sony and would go hand in hand with my next rumour.

A PS2 with a built in upscaler to 1080p and a HDMI output is the last rumoured hardware from Sony. It will allow people to view DVDs, Singstar and Buzz in 1080p with out it looking like a total mess. It would also be nice to see God of War in HD.... Oh sorry God of War III is coming on the PS3, Sony's HD gaming system

Likelihood: 20% I really hope that this doesn't happen, the PS2 was one of the greatest systems ever made just leave it be

How smart is it: For a general consumer it would be a good move on Sony's part, as a gamer I don't want it to happen.

SE Huge E3 announcement?

Square Enix made a hell of a fuss at last year’s E3. Its announcement at Microsoft’s pre-show press conference that the highly anticipated then PS3 exclusive Final Fantasy XIII would also be coming to the Xbox 360 was the talk of the town. Will the legendary developer be able to make as big an impact at the 2009 show?

It would seem so.

We’ve received word on what Square Enix will be showing at the E3 event, and fans of two of their biggest series will be extremely happy with the media set to get far better access to some key products than we had initially hoped. As much as we would like to tell you the specifics it has been requested that the names of the games be kept under wraps until the company has a chance to officially announce them. However, for the sake of excitement we thought we would give you the heads up so you can discuss it amongst yourselves.

We don’t want to push our luck on this one, but there is no Square Enix press conference this year so you can expect an announcement prior to the E3 show regarding no less than three big surprise games which are currently unannounced – at least two of which are multi-format. We wish we could tell you more, but knowing something is better than knowing nothing… debate below, but don’t ask us because we’re not about to spill the beans.

Next week, representatives from the press, video game publishers, hardware manufacturers and the public will descend upon the South and West halls of the Los Angeles Convention Center for the world's largest video game consumer show. Some of the biggest news of the year will be revealed over the course of the four-day-long event, and we don't want readers to miss out on any of it. You can stay on top of all of the press releases, announcements, and keynote presentations here at the GameFlavor Network, but we have provided a calendar below so that you won't miss a single important event on the E3 schedule.

Sunday, May 31st: Members of the press start arriving in Los Angeles, from as far away as Japan and Europe. Early birds will be able to register for their press passes on Sunday afternoon starting at 1PM to avoid long lines on Monday morning. Don't forget to bring a piece of photo ID to the registration, or you will not be admitted.

Even though the convention officially begins on June 2nd, many video game industry folks are already here, having spent the previous few days setting up booths and preparing for their interviews with journalists. Many announcements and demo presentations will actually take place away from the official convention center venues, so look for demo impressions and announcements to start leaking out as early as Saturday afternoon.

Monday June 1st: The E3 Expo officially opens its doors for registration at 8:00 AM. That means members of the press will have already formed a queue outside the convention center, hoping to grab their passes and beat the crowds to make the Microsoft press event.

The Microsoft Press Conference will take place at 10:30 AM on June 1st. Normally, we wouldn't expect any huge announcements from the company mid-way through the current console cycle, but there are murmurings that Microsoft could surprise us. Some outlandish predictions have the company announcing a motion controller and an Xbox 360 version of Metal Gear Solid, among other things. There is even talk that the company could unveil a ZuneX portable game device at the E3 event.

Tuesday, June 2nd: Many folks will have overslept due to heavy partying the night before, so this might be a good chance to get in early at 8:00 AM and grab your pass at the Media Center.

Nintendo will get the rest of us up early for its annual E3 press conference scheduled for 9:30 AM. These things are always a big surprise for us, and who knows what Iwata and the rest of the magical oompa-loompas have cooked up for us this time. A new Zelda on the Wii? More casual minigames? New Super Mario Brothers 2? We can guarantee the event will be full of surprises.

Some will argue that Sony has been shafted in terms of scheduling, while others will say that convention organizers are saving the best for last: Sony's Keynote address will take place at 11:00 AM on the main stage. It would be an understatement to say that there is a lot riding on this year's convention for Sony. The company has to provide a roadmap for success on each of its two main systems heading into next year. For that reason, we expect a lot of bombshell announcements from Sony's E3 presentation. Some of the highlights will probably include the PSP Go!, the new Team Ico project, and possibly a redesigned PS3 Slim.

After the Sony presser, the show floor will be officially opened at 12 PM, and will stay open until 6 PM. This is your opportunity to try out some of the megaton games announced just hours earlier at the press conference. Expect the place to be packed, however, so you might face long lines at the more important demo booths.

Wednesday June 3rd: Meeting rooms will be open at 9:00 AM for early birds, while the show floor will be open at 10:00. This is the opportunity to check out some of the exclusive Sony and Nintendo titles that were revealed the day before, with slightly fewer people standing in your way.

Thursday June 4th: The last of the closed-door meetings will wrap up and the show floor will be closed down at 6:00 PM. Many tears will be shed as tired journalists head home from another exciting year at E3.

With all of the rumblings of news coming from Hideo Kojima's drip-fed tease for his next project it's probably no surprise that Konami's E3 press conference is promising revolutionary announcements.

Set for Wednesday at 3 p.m. in the LA Convention Center, Konami's presser will feature a "variety of high-profile speakers for all major platforms," according to the press release.

Konami's Press Conference will highlight games across all genres targeted towards players of all age groups and skill levels. Konami will feature groundbreaking announcements that you will truly not want to miss.

Consider that one more appointment penciled into our already over-crowded E3 schedule. Liveblog ho!

It's official. Activision is headed to E3 and it's bringing with it a bunch of games, including the highly anticipated Modern Warfare 2 and the nervously anticipated Tony Hawk: Ride.

It's a blend of sequels, spin-offs and original product, as new properties like Bizarre Creations' Blur and Raven Software's Singularity compete for attention against Guitar Hero 5 and DJ Hero. There are even a handful of licensed properties that will get some screen time.

Although the info comes from Activision Blizzard corporate, there's no announced last-minute representation from the Blizzard side. We may just have to see StarCraft II and Diablo III at a later date.

Read on for the full list of games that are and aren't Modern Warfare 2, then let us know which ones you're most excited about. And we'll play 'em!

* Modern Warfare 2
* DJ Hero
* Guitar Hero 5
* Tony Hawk: Ride
* Blur
* Singularity
* Prototype
* Wolfenstein
* Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen
* Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2

I am just interested in the top title!! :sniper:

Macquarie Research is banking on Sony announcing the heavily rumoured PSP revamp that will feature a none-UMD design at E3 next week. Sony has previously denied any such rumours of an improved PSP on the way. The research firm went on to state the new PSP could cost more than the existing model...

"We expect Sony to announce an improved PSP including a sliding touch screen with only download games offering (no UMD disc) as well as expanded PSN offering. We don't think this will be well received, but we are worried the pricing might be well above the existing model's US$199 price point. No price cut for PS3 is expected, but we think it likely the slimmer model is announced at the same current price of US$399 and with a price cut of US$100 closer to the holiday season."

SE New MMO PS3 Exclusive

A few days ago we broke the news regarding Square Enix’s E3 plans, which included the announcement of three all new games. At the time of writing we had been requested to not divulge the names or giveaway said titles, but we’ve just received new information about one of those three games that comes with no such restrictions. So here we go…

Contrary to what we were originally told, there will be a Square Enix press conference after all, at 11a.m on the Wednesday of the show. This will be a portal for selected media to learn more about one of Square Enix’s currently unannounced games, which we can reveal is an MMO codenamed Rapture, and set for release on PS3 and PC. The game is expected to be unveiled at the Sony press conference on the Tuesday.

While the PC and Xbox 360 have shared a strong software relationship over the last three years, the PC and PS3 have a more open rapport when it comes to online interactivity between the software and the gamers. It seems bizarre given Microsoft’s networking know-how, but the heavy restrictions it puts in place with the way developers can manipulate and engage their audience through Xbox Live makes it difficult for some games to make the most of their potential. Also worthy of note is the fact that the PS3 is free to play online, and it is more flexible in the headsets, keyboards and mice that can be used with it than the Xbox 360.

A classic precedent for all this is Epic Games’ decision to launch Unreal Tournament III on PS3 and PC well ahead of Xbox 360, claiming that Sony’s console better facilitated what they wanted to achieve in access and distribution of user-created Mods.

All that said and done, MMOs have still struggled to find the success on consoles that they have on PCs: even Square Enix own Final Fantasy XI failed to impress. It should be noted, however, that the company has used the term MMO, not MMORPG, which means it could be something totally unexpected.

The birdy continues to give me some more scoop on what's going on with E3 2009. I've been informed that a brand new Def Jam game will be shown at this year's E309. No more details about it but expect a nice booth promoting that game.

I just hope there isn't no Auto-Tune in this game.

Turns out I got a lot of work so I might only make it to open day of E3, so I might have my badge just sitting there for one whole day lol. I might call up some friends see if they want to go. My brother is going one day so yeah sucks major arse!
