Whilst I agree that no one is forced to buy the Zbox and I certainly exercised that right even though the steelbook appealed to me, I just wish someone like HMV got more steelbook exclusives as if this is a success i'm afraid that more and more of the better and harder to find steelbooks released by zavvi will be bundled with a Zbox. As it stands I only have a zavvi account for steelbook purchases so if they go this way, I'll just source my steelbooks from elsewhere.

In the same breath Some of us don't like paying £40 for Asian steelbooks that come with all the extra cardboard, I'm not interested in the slip, a number card, art cards or lenticulars but we still pay it to get the steelbook and no one batters an eye lid or even when they released 4 different avengers films with 4 different slips! Why do that? To get more sales and more money but yet no body complains now that zavvi are doing it everybody is kicking off, a cardboard slip has the same value as a cheap comic in a Zbox to me, nothing.

To be honest, I don't think that's a fair comparison.

Like basil has said too, not everyone an afford a mystery each month and especially when those mysteries are quite naff. I've seen a handful of decent products in these boxes and the dredd badge was probably their best effort

I don't think any member here has been able to buy every single steelbook they've wanted, nobody here has unlimited buying power. However your point is valid that it's extra cost by buying it with the ZBOX, but it's the only option for the consumer. Someone said in this thread that they are in a position where they don't own Iron Man play.com, want to own Iron Man, but can't afford the regular £100 price tag on eBay. This release in comparison is a much cheaper alternative with potential of 2 discs and the lenticular magnet. There is an Asian Iron Man going for around £50 but there are also people who don't want international releases. That can leave the consumer with the decision to either buy the ZBOX to own Iron Man at £40 or simply choose not to but hope it gets an individual release. Like most other members I would prefer to see this has its individual release, but it doesn't.

Has anyone considered if this fails perhaps zavvi won't bother with UK exclusive re-releases of marvel films.

They don't have to release these steels like you don't have to buy this bundle.

I'm sure Zavvi are well aware of Marvels popularity. I agree with your last sentence.

Thing is, the Zbox has nothing to do with steelbook collecting, absolutely nothing.
It wouldnt be quite as horrible if the Zbox was Iron Man themed, but it would still be really really bad, just for the single reason that the concept of the zbox is completely unrelated to the steelhobby. Its pure bullsheit...

As so many has said already, its a marketing scam to get their sheitboxes sold, nothing more, wether some buy the box just to get the steel or not.
If you buy it, its may very well screw everyone else over if they continue with this. Its shouldnt be encouraged.

Fair point.
I also don't own a iron man steelbook yet (got plays iron man 2 and zavvis iron man 3) so I really want this but I'm not paying them extra to help their dying Zbox creation.
I'll wait it out and if it sells out then I've lost out.
I just don't want zavvi to think this is fine and if successful then every 2 or 3 months we get marvel steels bundled with a Zbox and I was hoping with the power of us on here we could stop that.
Obviously didn't work that way and can understand people also commenting on buying this and giving the box to their kid or to someone as a present

BUT the fact this is nearly been live for 2 weeks speaks for itself.

I bought the age of ultron bundle - I really wish I didn't and have learned from that mistake, but I have messaged zavvi yesterday and asked will the customers who have paid for it already back in May have priority of the steelbook being sent out before the other customers who have pre ordered it without the Zbox and due to horror story's of members not recieving the dredd, bugs life and rataoulille steelbooks yet and also because I've pre ordered items from day one and got cancellations due to overselling (happened with me on avengers lenti and sleepy hollow).

Today I got a pretty crappy message from them today saying they can't guarantee me I'll be sent the age of ultron steelbook due to possible overselling. Which has made me mad considering I've already paid for it and I'm awaiting a further reply (I will post it in the age of ultron thread when I get more info).
I was also going to post it all in here because I don't trust these.
You get a dispatch email and pay for the whole thing but then your order sits in the completed section. I hope they have a system in place which tells them who already bought it with a Zbox but it sounds like they don't due to some members saying zavvi are not doing anything about it as the Zbox was sent months ago.

So that's another thing to possibly look forward to if you buy these bundles.

I'll find out in a month about my age of ultron steelbook but I won't be ordering bundles again if that messes up.

The problem is with Zbox is customers don't all get the same items and don't know exactly what they are getting until delivery
They are different with some having something decent and others having cheap items
Its a lucky bag as to what you get apart from set items that will be the same in each box

Most of what's in these Zbox is cheap items with a few decent products they have yes improved compared to previous early Zbox releases but are still overall items you would not purchase on their own normally except those customers who would be interested in purchasing these items

I don't have any problems with Zavvi doing a package of a Zbox with a steelbook as long as you have the option to purchase the steelbook on its own and not end up having to pay lot more than you would just for a steelbook alone

Its not fair to customers to have to purchase a Zbox just to get a steelbook and is alienating their regular steelbook customers in my opinion

The fairness of the tie-in multi-purchase really is separate from the value/merit of the Zbox.

As much as Zavvi have tried my patience of late with the Dredd steelbook I do think the Zbox is decent. And it's not a "lucky bag" in the manner you describe - with the items being the same across the boxes - sure you might get 1 of 4 different Funko Pop's from Big Hero Six but your post reads like one person gets a Funko Pop and the next one, a 10p plastic kazoo. Stuff like exclusive variant cover comics, much wanted Baby Groot funko pops, exclusive artist designed t-shirts (The "Undead" T-shirt is amazing, design was by the same chap who did that stunning Fifth Element steelbook) etc.

These mystery boxes aren't a mystery at all - in-fact a lot of people who get them are often the exact same people who collect steelbooks of movies - movie fans are often geeks and current culture is dominated by geek culture which makes me find the disparaging view of them a little askew from a website full of collectors, many of whom would not bat an eyelid at ponying up £40 for an Asian steelbook release.

As someone who gets the odd mystery book as well as collecting steelbooks, movies, comics, figurines etc I'm starting to feel a little ostracized here.

Haha, don't. 1000's of collectors of all kinds of items visit and post in our community every week. Steelbooks are 1 part of our site. Feel free to visit other parts of the site to connect with folks who appreciate prints, Funkos, Statues and all levels of collectibles (rare and casual), across the world.

As a side note, no retailer will "put all of their eggs in one basket". Retailing is about leveraging margin and introducing buyers of 1 type of product, to other products to cross-sell.This is the case for all retailers. How the promotions are designed varies, but trying to appeal to folks who buy 1 branded item is as old as retailing itself....and occurs at retailers across the world.

Marvel Steelbooks sell out on their own without the need for a Zbox

If Zavvi had Iron Man available to order on its own it would have sold out in a day
The mistake was making it only available with a Zbox

Zavvi will be very capable of selling out Marvel Steelbooks with ease just sell the Steelbook on its own

It was a crazy idea to try get customers order a Zbox/Steelbook bundle just because it's Iron Man that was not going to work

Iron Man Steelbook available on its own = a Sold out release

Iron Man only available with a Zbox = slow sales and most likely stuck with stock

If they want to sell out make available on its own

It's very easy a very popular title will sell out but don't try to make customers buy another product they don't want

I think the point is that Zavvi are NOT doing it.

If Zavvi, and everyone involved in the manufacture and distribution of U.K. steelbooks, took the same care and effort that has clearly gone into some of those steelbooks from abroad I wouldn't mind paying GBP 30 - 40 for something similar with a U.K. j-card.
These 'prestige' steelbooks would obviously not be for every release as that would price most of us out of the game, but just for specific titles - maybe one a month as 'Specials'.

This would not affect regular steelbooks available at present in the approx. GBP 14.99 - 24.99 range.

Zavvi are in the main not selling us true collector's items like some of those I've seen from other countries and whether some of us don't appreciate slips, art cards etc. it's clear to me that great care and effort has been taken in the manufacturing process of some of those steelbooks and they look specifically designed to appeal to the steelbook collector who wants something a little less ordinary, just that little bit special.

I personally have yet to buy a non-U.K. steelbook and looking at some of the artworks on show - on some of the Mondos for example - I feel that I'm missing out. . .

A ZBOX is NO SUBSTITUTE for a collector's edition steelbook !!!

What Zavvi are doing is selling nice steelbook packaging for our favourite films and even if some artwork is below par it's still a darn site better than those ugly blue plastic cases :)

We all know that these steelbooks sell out PDQ on their own but the point is that Zavvi needs to shift the ZBOXs and they can't shift them without the steelbook included :)

Zavvi don't need to shift anything. This zbox hasn't even come out yet. It's not like they've been sitting in a warehouse for the best part of a year.

If they were making such losses on these boxes then they'd cease to do them.q

I don't think its as easy as that. They have obviously set up a new department up (or table of 4 people) and have all these 6 month plans in place which some people may of opted for and also they do create a magazine and Inside of the box so they have that designed within the department (could still be the people who design the emails and site pictures) with some Zbox exclusive items so maybe they have deals with certain company's. Never know though, or it could end after a year or 2. They won't want it to fail within a year tho hence the push with a iron man steelbook.

Oh and they do have some previous zboxes sitting in a warehouse hence the price drops on previous boxes and the random dip boxes. Plus adding items to orders like the dredd badge on Star Wars and ghost rider keyring on ghost rider.
