Previous update:

Thanks to Wreck we have now found out that the steels will feature LANDSCAPE ART and NO INSIDE ART, with the possibility of having no back art either (to be confirmed).

I don't know about you guys, but I am fuming! It's like having a steelbook and taking a massive dump on it.... I had such high hopes for this from both Universal and Play.com - but it looks like I'm going to have to pass completely.

So guys.... How do you feel about this news? This is a good chance for us the consumers to voice our opinions.

Note to Mods: if this news turns out to be wrong by all means please delete this thread.[/SPILER]

Why didn't Universal just give these to HMV? They do a good job with most of their exclusive steels - lets go through a couple.

Thor
Captain America
Drive
Super 8

And guess what they all have in common - No printed ratings!

hint, hint play.com

Three of those titles were the same world-wide. And retailers are more at the mercy of the studio. So it's not a case of Play.com doing something wrong. However hopefully our cry will be heard by the studio. :naughty:

I wasn't expecting anything great with these anyway if I'm honest. I mean, they are Play.com exclusives after all, and we all know how shoddy their steelbooks usually are. Although, I don't actually mind horizontal steels too much.... it's just the lack of back art that nags me. HMV certainly wouldn't settle for such poor quality!

Oh come on people you cannot seriously blame play.com for the production of these titles they are a retailer and sell whats supplied!
Saying that i was looking forward to Casino and Carlitos Way :-(

So is it the case that HMV have a better exclusivity deal with the studio? There must be something in the water if the HMV studio ones turn out fine and then Play.com studio ones do not???

They agree with whoever produces them to sell them as exclusives though. So my point was... they seem to accept/sell any old crap nowadays.

and as a buyer you accept to buy it, if they dont live up to what i want ill get the canadian goodfellas anyone know where else i can get carlito?

all things considered a lame artwork, wrong format, printed rating ... wtf ... that fits!
i save money!

recently i've changed my steelbook buying behavior cause that's not longer supportable! some months ago i had to get them all. all new steelbooks from any "new" wave. i think you know what i mean. guys, steelbooks are nice, i love steelbooks, i have nearly 300 of them ... but anytime this has to come to an end. 25 steelbooks in the new universal wave in germany ... oke ... 4 weeks later another wave of 25?? wave in the UK... WHAT THE HELL?
... yes i know, we know this already for months/years: steelbooks are not longer a limited special product.

last year i bought all steelbooks from a new wave,
today i only bought 2 out of 25 of the german universal wave ...
so when the UK wave comes with landscape format ... i say ... YES! YOU IDIOTS! **** OFF :D HAHA

Well said (maybe a little blunt lol), just cause they release them doesn't mean you must have them! There are always options worldwide. Its the internet era people, may be a little more expense elsewhere but what are you buying for youself or future profit

you're right :) so am i :D
some months ago it was like "... i must have them" ... but everyone has to decide oneself *g*

We're not going to buy them! That's the point if you haven't been reading the above posts.... And we're not here to argue either.... Just to discuss the issue at hand of these (Universal and Play.com) steels, if you have no interest in buying these steels then don't post anything.... If you are interested like me and several others then please voice your opinions of how you would like to see these steels produced. We are the consumers and collectors after all, and I don't need to be told how to buy my steels.

For me the golden rules are:

1. Front Art (Vertical - Not Landscape)
2. Back Art (Vertical - Not Landscape)
3. Inside Art (if possible - though Drive did a great job with no inside art)
4. No Printed Ratings
5. No Blu-Ray Banners just a clean steel.

It just seems, Steelbooks exclusive to Play are generally dissapointing. You can understand why collectors are pointing the finger at them.

I wouldn't hold your breath on Universal changing they're plans for this wave. That is, if they are responsible for this bizzare change in orientation.

Good job getting this info though Wreck. It's producing some healthy discussion as to how members want these and future releases to turn out.

I agree... Bravo to Wreck for supplying us with this info.... Maybe Universal or whoever is responsible can make ammends before the final art is decided.

I had 5 titles that I wanted order on this wave... But after this news it went down to 1 and that is just 'The Thing' and even then the artworks got to be pretty impressive for me to buy it.

Some artwork which is already well associated with a movie just won't work aesthetically if used horizontally, and their art department must know that which makes it a very bizarre decision to do all the art that way. Similarly not all cover art works in portrait mode either; imo Public Enemies (DE) springs to mind as coverart that was poorly executed. Now they have let it be known what their intentions are they best tread very carefully if they want it to be a success.

Personally, I'm not a big hater of Landscape as long as the artwork is there. There are certain titles it worked really well (Fast Five UK).
Ultimately, we the consumer, do have the ultimate say on how these are made. If they make it, crappy or not, and we buy it....they will make more!
If we don't buy it...they will not make it, or at least try something different to get it right.
They know the market is there.

Noooooooooooooo. WHY Universal, WHY!!!!! ?

Finally a steelbook of the incredible Hulk among others and they ruined it. All with the hopes of English titles for a UK release and no logos.

Most thankful to Wreck for the information though. PASS on the entire wave if this the case as I won't be buying a single one if nothing changes.

Boo and a big thumbs down for Universal on this wave.

Is the second wave from Germany safe from this horizontal mess or no word yet on that wave ?

eh - Horizontal or Vertical artwork - either way, if i like it, i like it. Not for or against either format.
